The beginning of my first semester of college was one of the biggest milestones in my life so far. There is really no better word to describe how I was feeling other than terrified. My biggest fear was not learning anything and not being able to take in anything that was being taught and use it throughout the rest of my college career and even later in life. Although I was absolutely frightened at the idea, I did however grasp many new skills. Three strong points have made a tremendous impact on my education not only in this course but others as well. My strengths will certainly be beneficial in my future classes and outside of school.
One of the things I learned in how to work in an online group. The idea of working

For example, there were four parts to writing the paper: sketch, development, draft, and final version. Dividing the paper into four sections helped me make my paper stronger and be more clear. With the sketch part I could just thorw in ideas and take them out later if I no longer wanted to use them. Before I would just come up with a few or even a single idea and just go with it. Now I know how expand my mind and explore different thoughts to find the strongest one. Developing the essays allowed for me to add a little bit more organization to my sketch and add more detail to build the actual paper from. Submitting a rough draft gave my professor a chance to add in suggestions and recommendations which I then applied to my paper. Lastly, I know when I turned in the final papers they were well thought out with time being spent on them. Separating the paper in sections was a positive advantage for me and my overall …show more content…
Never in my four years of high school have I seen such an improvement in myself in this area. I felt that in my high school courses my vocab expanded some but not nearly as much as in just one class in one semester. With my better use of language, I also have a better choice of words. Despite the fact that writing papers is a major source of improving, even just googling synonyms for words showed me how many words are out there and how much stronger they can make a piece. I think that my extended vocabulary has made a huge impact on the way I write. These three skills stood out to me most and will be most beneficial to me in essays to come and life events that occur. I am very confident that taking this course in general will assist me in succeeding in future schooling. I have acquired some communication skills and know how to use those for projects later on. My essays of all kinds whether it be narrative or a research paper will be more substantial due to my improved organization and choice of words. My advancements will be used throughout my college experience and
I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.
With college right around the corner and taking a college course gave a real sense of how college classes are going to work giving me an edge over all of the other students going to college that didn’t take a dual enrollment course. Dual enrollment was honestly one of the best decisions I made in my academic career because like what I was saying this class taught me the inner workings of how most assignment are going to be turned in, what it means to be self-reliant/ on your own have no help with assignment from your parents, experiencing a course that only a handful of assignment rather than a ton of assignment ends up making up over eighty percent of your grade (getting you to work extra hard so you won’t fail) and finally that you have to actually interact with the professor/teacher if you need help or are having trouble with an
Drafting was something I never did a lot of, I always felt that my paper had to be great the first time, or else I failed as a writer. Drafting as much as you can is important because revising is very necessary. I have seen that the more drafts you do the better your writing gets. I understand now that that you can do many things to make your writing become better, and that there is always room for
With the first day of any core class there is a slight apprehension to what can be held within the semester ahead. The moment I stepped out of the classroom after the first day, I came to the realization this class was going to change me as a person. Through many readings, discussions, movies and personal opinion papers my values, knowledge, and future actions have both changed and strengthened. Three questions have been answered throughout the semester, Who am I? What do I know? and Based on what I know how should I act? Human behavior has enlightened me with issues that I can personally relate to and the effect has easily been the most beneficial compared to any other core class I have taken.
It shows how and why college believes the teaching of these skills to be a necessary part of a university education
It is said that the college experience is not for everyone. That not everyone can achieve the high expectations of everything that encompasses the requirements that are needed to successfully complete the work required. When I first started college I felt like I was one of the ones that did not belong, but as I struggled through each class I slowly learned that the possibilities for me to succeed where there. By looking over my previous essays, this essay will examine and help express how I have achieved what was required of me in this class.
I realized that I was capable of conquering obstacles and working with them so I could smooth out the road for my future. With my new studying habits, and my ambition and passion to learn, I will be able to pursue my journey through hard work and determination. I now feel capable of overcoming any challenge I may face in college because of the difficulties I have already conquered. My life now moves in a way that I can keep up with and still absorb the knowledge, positivity, and other life changing experiences that I come across. My memory definitely challenged me in a new way, but I am thankful for the experience as it shaped me into the person I am
I am just beginning my college career and that means many more papers to come. I may not always be so enthusiastic about writing them but as long as I use this strategy to tackle the assignment, it will be fine. Learning to break down a paper into small parts instead of looking at it as one whole, big, daunting assignment has helped me a great deal and allows me to put more focus into each paragraph or topic, resulting in better written papers.

The writing skills I focused on for each paper were lessening my grammatical errors and working on having better vocabulary as well. I thought I was really good at writing papers until I got to this class and realized I can't half ass anything and I need to take the time into my work. I have always struggled with spelling and commas but I have become much better after first semester. The papers I worked the hardest on in first semester was my Research Paper, and my Profile Essay because I actually took my time on it and had to do extra work than just think of something to write about and type it. I got to interview someone, and do research that will make my paper
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
Over the length of the semester, many things have been taught and many skills have been learned, all to help myself be successful. I believe that some important skills that have been taught were motivation, personality, communication, time and money management, and critical thinking. Using these skills has helped me to have great relationships with the faculty and students of FSW in my first semester.
As I look back on the beginning of my journey to a better career and life I can remember the weeks and months leading up to the first day of class. I remember visiting the college and speaking with an advisor to decide exactly what it was I wanted to do, and the steps it would take for me to reach my goals. I recall talking with the advisor about the requirements for my General Education credits as well my need to take a preparatory class for algebra because I scored to low on the placement exam to be allowed to take the full college level math. Along with the preparatory math class my advisor told me that I needed to take “Foundations for College Success”, which I questioned. My advisor explained that the course would lay a solid foundation for me to build my college expectations and learning on by explaining what to expect from college as well as how to handle some of the out of the ordinary roadblocks that college life would undoubtedly throw my way. I remember thinking as probably most all new students do “I don’t need this” or “This is just a filler class, it can’t possibly show me anything I don’t already know”, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. As I near the end of my time in the Foundations for College Success course I can truly say I am glad I was required to take the course as it provided me with an invaluable wealth of knowledge that will help me throughout the rest of my journey.

Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
