Thankfully society has come a long way since the epidemic of racism, discrimination and prejudice has come a long way through the decades. But unfortunately, despite making strides towards acceptance for everyone, racism, discrimination and prejudice still consumes the mind of many individuals. My involvement in the Peer Helping program for the past three years at my high school has given me the opportunity to explore the issue of discrimination through various workshops and conferences. In 2014 I was one of four students from my school to take place in a conference organized by the Ottawa Catholic School Board’s Equity and Inclusive Education Committee. At this conference students from all over the region came together to discuss strategies …show more content…
In correlation with the conference I previously mentioned, I’ve taken part in other workshops and conferences that have exposed me to what a positive effect people can have when they come together to make a change. This past December I took part in an activity called “Christmas Connections.” This was an event that Peer Helpers at my school hosted for ESL (English Second Language) students, the majority being newcomers to Canada. I was paired up with two ESL students and was able to talk with them, play games and make Christmas ornaments. I learned about their lives in their country, their traditions and struggles the have faced while being in a new school. It was heartwarming to see a group of high school students get together for the benefit of new students. Teenagers often have a stigma surrounding them. An assumption that they are selfish. That stigma would be shattered for anyone who stepped into the St. Pius X library that day when Christmas Connections was taking place. People have the power to do amazing things and my goal is to continue to make a positive impact on society and help others to do the same by being the best versions of …show more content…
What interests you in applying to a structural school of social work? How does studying social work at Carleton fit with your career goals? I am interested in a structural school of social work because I have a strong motivation to create a positive change within society and the lives of others. The injustices and struggles that I have faced in my life have given me the desire to work with others and look for solutions to solved social injustices. Some of my favourite classes in high school have been the one’s where I have gotten the chance to conduct social experiments on “socially taboo” topics. For example, this past year I had the chance to conduct research on societal views on teen pregnancy. I believe that a structural approach to social work is crucial in today’s day and age. It is important to look deeper into social issues and injustices in order to find ways to overcome them rather than temporarily mask the problem. Looking at social work from a structural approach allows social workers to better connect with clients by looking at the societal problems that could be contributing to their personal
Social Work is the study of people and how they interact with the systems in their environment and other people. Social Workers use theories, sets of ideas or concepts, of human behavior and apply them within their professional social work ethics to the problems facing clients in order to help them gain balance in the systems in their lives. Theories help to organize knowledge enabling social workers to help make sense of problems. There are many different theories. They have been grouped into broad categories called theoretical lenses (Rogers, A. 2013).
I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.
Social workers should be able to define and describe main social work paradigms, philosophical and ideological approaches and appreciate their implications to practice, policy and research. Social workers should be also able to identify interrelations between social work paradigms, social policy and social
As a student on a social work placement the aims would be for the placement to provide me with a safe working environment creating opportunities for me to learn and practice my social work knowledge and skills to prepare me for the future for when I qualify. During my studies I will be on two placements one in year one and another in the final year. Placements enable students to work with a variety of people including: individuals, families, carers, groups and communities in a variety of settings. Therefore having two placement in different settings with different people with different needs will hopefully give me a better idea of what area I would like to specialise in once I have qualified
When pursuing a degree in social work, one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences within the degree aspect is the capstone project. The capstone is a multi-integrative assignment that is structure to provide social work students with the opportunity to apply their academic, professional and personal experience in the field through the application of a project. With allowing students to master the knowledge, skills, values, and ethics needed for effective social work practice, the capstone project also provide a development to really contribute in the knowledge of the profession. All social work capstone projects encourage students to unite their work to community issues and problems through learning, observations and internship. This paper examines the values, policy, conceptual framework, group
My passion to become a social worker began when I was pursuing an undergraduate degree. From a young age because of my compassion and empathetic nature, I knew that I wanted to work inside the human service field. I wanted to use my personal characteristics to improve individual’s lives. Social work was my calling because of the many different areas in the field that are all primarily focused on making a difference. I am interested in clinical social work, working with individuals and families.
“An array of knowledges, skills, abilities and contacts possessed and used by Communities of Color to survive and resist racism and other forms of oppression” encompasses the main idea of Community Cultural Wealth. It is vital to understand that students will step foot into the classroom with a variety of cultures zipped up in their backpacks, and it is our job as educators to make sure that equality is instilled/taught in our classrooms. The second a student feels a sense of discrimination, whether from ourselves or their fellow classmate(s), is when the safe and comforting environment of the classroom begins to diminish. Here I will discuss just how important it is to see the differences amongst students as an advantage
My view on social work has changed dramatically because of what I’ve learned so far in this course. I now realize social work is a global profession, and can take many forms. I was unaware that social work has become a global awareness across countries. Learning this has really interested me in
I was aware of these oppressions and have often times struggled with what I can do individually to work towards alleviating these oppressions. The Next Steps portion of the chapter on racism really outlined methods of actions that could be applied to all forms of oppression. One method entitled “FLEXing Cross- cultural Communications,” outlines productive communication, depersonalization, and open- mindedness when it comes to understanding and practicing competency. This model serves as a tool to motivate action to those form other cultures in ways that in the end everyone can
Racism is one of the world’s major issues today. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exists in our schools workforces, and anywhere else where social lives are occurring. It is obvious that racism is bad as it was many decades ago but it sure has not gone away. Racism very much exists and it is about time that people need to start thinking about the instigations and solutions to this matter. Many people believe that it depends on if a person was brought into the world as a racist or not but that is not the case at all. In fact, an individual cannot be born a racist but only learn to become one as they grow from child to adulthood. Basic causes, mainstream, institutions, government, anti racism groups, and even some hidden events in Canada’s past are a few of the possible instigations and solutions to racism.
Since secondary school I have focused on working academically to create a foundation for future success in a social work role. I studied Level 3 Ex...
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
It takes a very distinct individual to be a social worker as this field of study is quite brutal quite frequently. Social Work is enormously demanding emotionally, the pay is average, the daily challenges that must be met, often the work conditions are odd; but these are all responsibilities that I am willing to endure. Having seen and been through a great deal myself, this career seems feasible. I am quite passionate about people and strongly believe that this career will allow me to be rewarded by impacting the lives of others in a positive way. There seems to have been a need for social work since the Industrial Revolution, if not since the dawn of time, and it has always taken passionate individuals
As I have entered my professional career, social work continues to play a tremendous role for not only myself, but the
The work of a social worker is complex and all encompassing. Social workers work in many capacities seeking justice, liberation, and equality. There work is global, as they work to put policies in place to govern practices. To keep up with societal shifts and generational changes there learning is continuous. As new questions rise so does the need for the continuation of research, not only to answer these questions but to implement into
