During high school I thought I was a decent writer because I got A’s on all my papers and I always had an A in my writing or English class, however once I got to college it all changed. I now have realized that writing is one of my worst subjects and I’ve struggled with it ever since writing 101. It is a very big challenge for me to do well in such classes now, but in order for me to well I have to focus harder in writing classes than my other classes. My problem is not that I procrastinate, but that I don 't perform quality papers like I should. At the beginning of this semester, I had a great drive to perform well and make good grades. That is the reason why I did better on my analysis paper than any others. Towards the middle of the semester, I lost my motivation and it was one of the reasons why I scored so poorly on my papers, like my synthesis paper. I felt that I learned the most vital things during these assignments, the things that I will use in future classes. Not only did I learn about my topic, protein powder, but I learned how to create quality transitional paragraphs, research sandwiches, and even cite sentences from articles and books. An example of my improvement of transitioning from paragraph to paragraph is this “Just like there are different qualities of meat to consider, there are also different types of protein powders to consider when creating a well-balanced diet and maximizing workout results. There are different types of protein powder and it is important that the different types are taken at certain points of the day in order for them to work properly”. I went to the writing center for this paper and my instructor really explained to me how to properly transition and give me some very important tips which I will remember throughout the rest of my college
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
English has never been my best subject. Reading books can be exciting, but the writing aspect of English can be dreadful. Somehow, however, I passed all my advanced English classes with at least a B, and my teachers always considered me to be “above average.” My impartiality toward English shifted to an indifference near the end of my high school career; my indifference then shifted to appreciation. This appreciation is attributed to American Studies and Honors Writing, the most difficult English classes at Belleville East Township High School. American Studies and Honors Writing have strengthened my writing skills beyond what I believed possible. I still do not believe that I am the best writer, and English may never be my best or favorite
English composition has always been a weak point for me. I despised the thought of having to write down my thoughts on paper in a manner that was appropriate for my teachers. English 1301 introduced me to a new tool to soothe those crazy thoughts through stream of conscious writing. At first I was very skeptical, but it proved to be valuable in understanding that I had more knowledge of the topic of discussion than was realized. Although that tool helped tremendously, it did nothing to quell the quality of my procrastination skills. In high school, I completed most of my homework at the last minute. Coming into college, that clearly could no longer be the case but it still stuck. One concept that utilized my procrastination skills to my advantage was peer review. Peer review forced me to write all of my essays ahead of time in order to make the grade. Not only did it help with my procrastination, it also gave me lots of feedback on my writing. During the narrative essay draft one, I was given a lot of revisionary advice, and that was due to the fact that I wrote the paper at the last minute. Knowing that, when it came time to write the argumentative essay I spent more time actually putting better grammar and diction into my essay because I did not want my peers to think any less of me academically. English 111 was different from what I expected a college English course to be. I was expecting to have to read books and analyze the meaning of the themes. I found it challenging to have to analyze different websites and design our own. This was different from what I experienced in high school English classes. This course required that I expand beyond my comfort zone when writing essays. This required that I put more time and dedication into projects. It allowed me to learn valuable skills to use in other courses in college and I learned what abilities I need to concentrate on. I carry with me the abilities to use rhetoric devices to analyze websites, research techniques to polish the ethos of my papers, and the knowledge that I need to refine using other sources of media (i.e. websites, PowerPoints, etc.) to present an argument from English 111.
Coming into this experience, I questioned where I would find my place in the Senate. In 2014 I came here as a page and was able to witness daily floor action, but I never had the opportunity to be a part of day to day office business. I knew I would be at the bottom of the totem pole as an intern, but I wanted to feel as if I was making an impact on Senator Reid’s last year in office. In an office as large as Harry Reid’s it is hard to feel as if you are making an impact. I had the misconception that I would be working closely with him; however, thus far I have only spoken with the Senator one time. Within the first week I readjusted my expectations to try and find my role within the office. I was still doubting the impact I would make here this summer. With the Senator retiring, the office is tending to run particularly slow. When available, work was handed down to us by the Legislative Correspondents. Work primarily consisted of covering hearings, attending briefings, and doing research. I signed up for English 131 because I enjoy writing and figured it would be a fun and informative course in which I could learn writing strategies to help me in my college career and beyond. I’ve always thought of myself as a pretty good writer, as I took AP English classes in high school and it has always been a subject I’ve naturally gravitated towards. This course exceeded my expectations as to what I could learn in ten weeks. I feel that my writings skills have developed in all aspects, and I can take the skills I have learned and applied them to other courses and my future career. It’s an extremely good feeling after finishing an assignment, reading it over, and feeling very proud of how I was able to develop my thoughts and resources into something that has the potential to make a lasting impact on its readers.
The end of the semester has arrived and with it comes time for reflection. This semester has had many ups and downs. However, one thing is for sure: it was a fantastic first semester of college.
My first semester at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte has been everything that I expected it to be. I knew it would be strenuous to move to a new city totally different from what I had grown up in. I also know that this would put a strain on making new friends, keeping up with my social life, maintaining a healthy mental and physical and healthy lifestyle, and achieving my goals - nonetheless, I have managed to do all of these things and have a splendid time doing so.
Chapter 10 is entitled Conflict Management in Groups. This is a very essential chapter for all members of a group to read and understand. Fortunately, my group members and I have not had a problem with getting along. It just so happened that four members of my group already know each other from another class they are in together. So, they already got along and had some connection with one another. I think we all have good personalities and we enjoy working with each other. The characteristics of our group allow us to be a successful group. The semester is coming to an end, and we have worked hard together to perform all tasks and accomplish all our goals. Getting to the stage where we are now involved a lot of comprimising and negotiating. So, the two terms I would like to concentrate on from Chapter 10 is comprimise and negotiation. To me, comprimise is meeting someone half way. You may have to adjust some of your beliefs or ideas to fit the beliefs or ideas of another group member. the book defines comprimise as a middle ground. You show a moderate concern for both task and social relationships in groups. The next term I would like to look at is negotiation. I would define negotiation as giving and taking to reach a common goal. The book’s definition of negotiation is a process by which a joint decision is made by two or more parties. After researching information for my group project and listening to another group’s presentation, it is evident that everyone thinks comprimise and negotiation are very important. There was a strong emphasis on avoiding conflict in the group
I spent four years of my life in rural Plymouth, NH, surrounded by trees, wildlife, and white people. My private boarding high school was a drastic change from growing up in the Bronx, NY. It was quiet. At times the silence was peaceful but it was also a reminder that I was far from home. There wasn’t any public transportation; people had to use cars to travel. At night, the sky lit up with hundreds of beautiful bright stars; a rare sight in the city. Almost every faculty member that lived on campus either had a new born baby, dog or both. The majority of the faculty was white heterosexual males though there were women as well, but none of which were of color. I wish I could write my younger self a letter. I want to tell her all the amazing things that will happen in college and not to be so worried, but I also want to tell her the bad things that happen. I know time travel does not exist, so I cannot, and young me would be mad at current me for spoiling stuff. Instead I write this reflection on what I think have been important lessons I learned from my first semester of college.
I usually have an idea in my mind, but I cannot always put those words into a sentence that is grammatically correct. When I put these thoughts into a sentence it does not always flow, and sometimes my paper sounds out of place and repetitive. I tend to write papers how I speak instead of actually grammatically correct. I took the advice of proofreading my paper, as well as, have a friend read it for any grammar mistakes. Another major problem I have as a writer is figuring out how to start my essay in the introduction, especially the ones I had never written before. I have to seek help from others to learn how a certain introduction should look and it holds me back tremendously. I have never been a creative writer so I struggle with keeping an interesting paper for my audience. I always end up rambling in my papers. I typically like research papers because I can get information online to strengthen my points in my essay and this semester has focused more on personal experiences. I always preferred when a topic was given to the class, but this year I have been able to grow more independent. I have had to choose my own topic to write about and it has helped me grow more creative in my
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
Over the years, I was always a person who struggled on producing quality material when it came to writing about a book or piece of literature assigned for me to read and analyze. Evidently enough, this struggle carried into this course and I have received subpar grades because of it. However, I believe that the tools, strategies, and knowledge given to me by the instructor has helped me greatly to improve my writing. Not only did they give me more of an outline to follow when I had no clue how to start but also, they have given more confidence that I can finish the assignment. One other thing I felt that was revealed through this class was my high level of procrastination and the consequences in result. After struggling with a few of the papers, I would always find myself putting them off until the day before they were due. This obviously wasn’t a great way to go about any responsibility and I found out the hard way and became very stressed for the last hours before class. I feel as though it is in everyone to procrastinate at least a little bit but now after taking this class I think I will make a greater effort to avoid doing so in the future to better my educational outcomes and my health itself.
