Oscar Wilde once said, “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” I feel that this quote does a really good job of expressing who I am as a person, and I know that the reason I have been so successful is because I am an optimist and focus on the positive rather than the bad things in life. I am the type of person who sees the glass as “half-full,” even in the worst of situations. This way of living had led me to become successful in numerous aspects of my life, from academics to my own personal growth. Throughout my years in high school, I have excelled in many areas, both academically in school and socially as a person. One area of my greatest strength is my ability to stay organized in all aspects of my life. In school, I am able to take pieces of information from a variety of sources and compile them into an original presentation or project. This work can be seen in my Volcano Research Project and my The Winter’s Tale Project. In my research project on the Cotopaxi volcano, I was able to research the topic, pick out the valuable information from many different sources on the internet, and compile it into a Prezi presentation. The organization of the presentation made it much easier for the rest of the class to understand when I presented the project. In my project on The Winter’s Tale, I was able to organize all of the different aspects of the project into a well-structured and easily understood booklet. I believe that my ability to stay organized has strengthened greatly over years of high school, and I feel that if I continue to stay organized it will be of great help beyond high school. I will surely remember this quote in my years beyond high school as I head off to college. By going off to college, I will face many new and exciting experiences, and I hope to put my heart and soul into everything that I do. My ultimate dream is to become a successful marine biologist involved in conservation or rehabilitation of marine mammals and environments. I know that my journey to achieve this dream will be tough and full of obstacles, but with a lot of hard work and dedication I can make it a reality. Although there have been many ups and downs throughout my four years of high school, I have learned many valuable life lessons that I will continue to remember in the years to come.
I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.
English has never been my best subject. Reading books can be exciting, but the writing aspect of English can be dreadful. Somehow, however, I passed all my advanced English classes with at least a B, and my teachers always considered me to be “above average.” My impartiality toward English shifted to an indifference near the end of my high school career; my indifference then shifted to appreciation. This appreciation is attributed to American Studies and Honors Writing, the most difficult English classes at Belleville East Township High School. American Studies and Honors Writing have strengthened my writing skills beyond what I believed possible. I still do not believe that I am the best writer, and English may never be my best or favorite
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
Henry Ford’s quote has inspired and encouraged me through difficult times to never give up. The hard times in my life have challenged and shaped me; these times have helped me to become a better person by forcing me to continue on through challenges. It will continue to inspire me into the future by reminding me that something difficult is not impossible, but it is merely a challenge. When I am struggling to succeed, I remember Ford’s quote and I continue to work because I know there will soon be an end to the struggle.
For personal and professional growth, given my personality traits, I need to embrace my strengths and weaknesses. I must use my strengths to my advantage, to be more effective academically and in the workplace, but I also need to identify and try to overcome my weaknesses, especially professionally.
In freshman seminar, I learned so much that could help me out with any class in college, with maybe the exception of science. I acquired the knowledge of how to write a self-evaluation, a biography, and a resume. Critiquing myself in a self-evaluation is better than trying to watch myself in the mirror and fix my mistakes on the spot. Taking the time to write out notes and learn as I go helps me remember what areas I need to improve in. Even though I gained an excessive amount of knowledge from freshman seminar, I still struggle with writing papers due to uninspired high school classes and the inability to reach into expanded detail. When assessing my current writing ability, I recognize my ability to efficiently relay a message; however, I struggle with using strong phrases and advanced writing. When I begin drafting a paper, translating my thoughts and ideas into words comes naturally, and I do not get lost in the process. As mentioned previously, the general areas that need improvement include using strong vocabulary to convey a professional level of writing. Also, I believe that I need to work on transition phrases between ideas.
My RIP companion essay was a complete mess with no structure in the first draft. I believe it was because I had procrastinated to complete both the first drafts for the RIP project and essay. I finished my RIP project then moved on to my companion essay, and the transition was vastly different because in the RIP project I was writing for a different audience than in the companion essay, which was an academic audience. In addition, I forgot that we had been given a prompt with specific instructions and guidelines for the companion essay, which gave the structure for the essay. Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
The time passed so quickly, this semester is almost done. After this semester of study, the goals I have made the most progress is the course Objective 1: “Reading texts from a variety of disciplines in a variety of genres”. Before when the teacher asks to read some articles I will just read it once and get over it. So I often times forget the detail of the story. And have to reread the reading all over again. I don’t like to read something over and over again, because that will make me get bored. For example, my history class is requiring a lot reading, and all the reading about history is boring and long. So I only read it once, because in my opinion spending a lot time in reading about this boring history book is horrible. Unfortunately, we are having a quiz on it, I start to recall, and I have some blur memory about the book. So I take out the book, and start to read, but is all too late for it. I have a bad grade on it, I will forever remember this lesson. If I read more in-deep and carefully, I might not get a bad grade on my history quiz. As the term comes to an end, I look back on my accomplishments in this class. ENG101A was the toughest and most challenging class I have taken, but I really feel like it has helped me to improve as a writer. I never expected that I would take another English class in my life, let alone go back to college. When I thought of English as a subject, I associated it with reading books or poems about subjects I never cared about or had a desire to write about. I always liked the creative writing sense, but in earlier studies one rarely get to do what one want in career life. I feel that has changed for me in this class. Perhaps it’s been so long since I’ve had a creative outlet to channel thoughts and create something from nothing. In Pace University, English Department focuses on improving students writing by adding a workshop class to improve students ' writing. Over the course of the semester, I have learned a better technique and tips from Professor Boylan, reading an essay from authors and class discussion. When I arrived at Yale during the fall of 2009 for my freshman year, I started my undergraduate career wanting to practice medicine. Being a part of Residential Summer Bridge 2015 has showed me a different way of life. I have learned that I need a lot of help with my academics. I believed I was a really good scholar when it came to academics but my grades have shown me different. I have created a different life style because before Bridge I wouldn’t do my homework assignments or even study. Every weekend I would go out and go to parties and do non-beneficial things. Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
