Collecting data for any essay is very important. It helps you analyze traits, gives evidence or explains a situation, person or a thing. For this particular essay I have chosen argumentative essay to explain the improvement to my writing process because that is an essay I had put lot of time in. Moreover, it was something I was a little confident about because when I read it, it had a weightage of knowledge. While collecting data, I was very conscious about the source and bookmarked them for later use.
I did not have a firm writing philosophy before this semester, but I to some degree I understood the importance writing can have on a situation. Now I understand that writing has two outcomes: gaining support or losing support. When writing an essay it is best if the writing is as specific as possible. This way the audience is hopefully not left with a confused opinion about the topic. Since the beginning of the semester I have put a conscious effort to change my writing style.
The one skill that I have vastly improved upon in this class is organization. I have always struggled to put my thoughts to paper in a manner that is coherent and as per the assignments. The skill of creating an outline, which I have developed in this class, helps me considerably. Indeed, an outline helps me to properly organize my essays, and it enables me to focus my mind on the main points that I want to write about .As I write each paper, I keep reminding myself that other people are going to read it. Therefore, I am aware that I have to provide my audience with a good introduction.
English 1010 was exactly the class I needed to improve myself as an assertive reader and writer. This semester, I have learnt not only about genre and genre selection, but also using concise language, sources, improving drafting skills and overcoming writers block. In How to Write Anything, the various genres and sub genres were displayed. This has helped to me to identify the genre of any paper based on the type paper I’m completing. For Example, I know that if I’m completing a product review, the genre of that paper is Evaluation.
Throughout the semester, Journalism has taught me various techniques in which have benefitted my writing as a whole. These techniques have taught me how to shape my papers/articles in a more organized manner while managing to state all of my points/ opinions on the certain topics I’m talking about. On top of that, learning how to structure my writing properly has changed my writing for the better. From learning so many techniques, it made me look at the way news is announced differently as well. Although it is asked to discuss what was most valuable to our learning, I have two techniques in which have been very valuable to me throughout the transition of learning how to properly write articles.
Although I have learned an immense deal of writing skills within this course there some things I feel I can improve upon, such as, introductions and properly heading papers. One of the first skills I feel that I have gained throughout this course is the ability to prove my points in writing assignments. I feel that I have improved on making my readers know exactly the points I want to get across and the points that keep to the topic. For example, on essay number one in paragraph two, I wrote about the reasons of why I felt the stand your ground law needed to be changed or removed. To prove my point one of the reasons I spoke about was the Trayvon Martin incident, of which I felt could affect my readers on an emotional level and get readers to agree with my stance.
The easy part was reading it, writing a summary, and even choosing the rhetorical choices the author used. However I struggled with being able to explain and show evidence of how the author used the rhetorical devices in their arti... ... middle of paper ... ...ntinue to work on after this writing course is; editing and revising my drafts. There were many times where I felt my essays or assignments were ready for submission, but the grades I received revealed that my papers indeed needed more revision and editing. Now that it's at the end of the course. I would have to say I enjoyed the challenge of this course.
This growth came from a lot of practice and the techniques that were taught to me during the course. There are several aspects of this improvement that I would like to mention. I learn new things about writing in this course. The things that were earlier not very important to me turned out to be crucial in the process of writing. For example, I was not very alert towards the use of good vocabulary but this course made me think about
I have improved upon areas that I was already competent in while addressing the weaker aspects of my writing. This class has been an invaluable learning experience that granted me many opportunities to become a masterful writer. One of those opportunities was the persuasive paper assignment. The persuasive paper assignment was challenging and insightful as it gave me an opportunity to express my new skills that I had learned over the course of this class. I started by taking the research opportunities I was given and narrowing down what I was hoping to talk about gave my paper an excellent foundation.
It is typed in a professional manner. Presents a lot of facts. Researching my topic was fun and interesting because I had to blend in quotes and read more in depth than I usually would. If I had more time I would have added more quotes and sources in my paper. The processes that work best for me is thinking about my topic then making a bullet list of important points to mention in my paper, and once that is done I will type my rough draft.
