People have always hailed America has the land of opportunity, the land of freedom, home of the free. In fact America has even spurred on its own “saying” known as “The American Dream”. The Oxford Dictionary has the American Dream defined as: “The ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative”. However, through the years the full understanding of the American Dream has changed, the goals of the nation has shifted. I believe as Christians we must look back to the past beliefs to gain a greater understanding of where as a group of people we are headed. Romans 15:4 states: “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” I love how it says everything written in the past was there to teach us, therefore we must use history to glorify God through our studies. First we must look at the Puritans who started their journey to America in the 1630’s. John Winthrop preached a wonderful sermon to the people to prepare them for the new land they were about to inhabit. Personally I believe Winthrop summarized what he …show more content…
