My family moved to the U.S. about five years ago. Before I came to the United States, I only have a little knowledge of English. As soon as I came, I have to start my school as a high school student. At the beginning of school I felt very stressful because I could not understand anything, and I’m very shy to make any friends because I could not speak any English. So I worked harder to try to pass all my class and to improve my English skills. My family is first generation immigrant so they cannot speak any English as well, so they all depends on me to help them translate everything. This can be very annoy but I did help me improved my English skills very soon.I also has regrets on some achievement I could done in High school but I didn’t. If I learned more on the writing process, grammar and citation in High School I would not struggle in college. And sometimes I’m not staying on point and sometimes out of topic. In my essay I saw that my essay there is tough transition between paragraphs.And the Academic writing is always smooth and flow.I also realize that my writing use evidences the transition is also very tough,sometimes I just use direct quote. My writing paragraph are stay focus just like the academic writing. In lower order of concerns I saw that I’m not using strong verbs , I always use simple word and I had a lot grammar problems as well. When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.
English 102 taught me a variety of important lessons. In one aspect, I learned how to work better with others. Similarly, the literary research paper deepened my understanding of other cultures. Lastly, my writing abilities have improved. The assignments and projects were an effective means of providing learning and growth.
Before this quarter started I was fairly confident that I had what it took to ace English 101. After the first paper, I realized I was mistaken. Throughout this quarter I have had numerous problems with my writing that proved I needed to do a little more studying to help take my writing to the college level. Although I did not fail any of my papers, there was plenty of room for improvement. All the areas I needed to improve on are all areas that I think every English 101 student should know. I believe that every student at the college level should know how to cite sources correctly, know how to use good transitions, and know how to properly elaborate their examples.
In one semester of English 101 I have learned so many things about writing. I used to believe that writing was just putting words on paper, but have since learned that writing is much more than that, I now understand that writing is a way of exploring my mind and of making connections with other writers and readers. Over the course of the semester I have been learning to write in a way that uses the skills of reflection, critical thinking, and much more. I have used these skills to compose two academic essays that I am submitting in a portfolio to determine my final grade in English 101. Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I thought that I did not have to worry about being prepared for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not going to be enough for college. Writing is not just something that I will use in English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate to professors. Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be something that did not come easy to me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to get my thoughts down on paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of writing that was required ended up helping me in so many ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me so much for college and real life.
When I first entered this class, I already knew that it wasn’t going to be easy just because I 'm not good with putting things into words and explaining myself with proper grammar. I can honestly say English 101 has really inspired me to be a better writer. This class affected me in a lot of ways it showed me that writing takes time and you can 't expect a paper to be great without any revising or editing. That has always been a mistake of mine, I would tend to free write a lot it seemed to be the only way I could get my thoughts processed on a paper. I would forget periods, commas and misspell words without even noticing. I never cared much for punctuation, but once I got into this class I knew it was much needed. The topics we wrote on were not just any random topics which in a way made it more interesting to write about things that are actually important and things our generation should be informed about.
Writing has never been a strength I have possessed. English 102 has been difficult and challenging for me because I have had to move past the high school level of a basic book report or a five paragraph paper that has narrowed my ideas of writing for many years. Putting on paper what my thoughts are in a way that is logical and accurate for what the assignment is asking has been hard for me this semester. My ideas are now more involved because I have learned through English 102 how to develop my writing skills in different formats, for example, in an annotated bibliography and a research paper. As a first-year college freshman, I came into the university with many expectations. My expectations lingered from the various subjects I encountered this semester. For example, the difference in high school and college course work; I thought the work would be totally difficult. I wondered if the material would be new, but also familiar. I also wondered if I would excel in the college level courses. As this fall semester moves on, I have realized that each experience I have had in my high school career has pushed me to achieve more in my college course work. I took English 2 Semester 1 my sophomore year of Highschool. I took the challenge to take English 2 honors that year. I was nervous to take that class knowing i had to be hardworking. i did work hard that semester. I would always complete my work, my quiz scores were high. My grade for the whole semster was at a stable B. I can say I was a good student. It was one day, towards the end of the semester that the class was assigned an essay. I was able to complete the essay, i followed what the directions asked us to do.I answered the prompt with no problem. When I checked infinite campus, I had seen that I received a zero on the assignment. The essay category is a high percentage grade. That essay was the only assignment going into that category. Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. I have never been good at english and I have always needed help, particularly with some essays. Depending on what that topic is, I could do a good job but more often I need my essays to be looked over. This quarter, I have been having many assignments in my english class that are in fact essays. I was unsure about an essay that was assigned about two weeks ago, so after I had written my rough draft, I went to visit my English teacher during her office hours. The fact that my teacher is so nice and friendly also made it easier for me to actually attend here office hours and ask her questions about my essay. I specifically asked her questions about my introduction and conclusion, since those are the main parts of my essay that I was iffy about.
Studying English was one of the most important and challenging tasks for me during the high school. Some of the teachers I meet were easy graders, however, others were very difficult. When I first came to the Drexel University, my language skills were not as good as they are today. The English 101 teacher helped me to improve my skills by showing the perspectives of learning and using English in everyday life. A few months later, by working hard on the major projects and informal writings, I have improved my writing and speaking skills.
English Composition 2 has been an engaging and interesting class. As an online course, though it was void of face-to-face interaction, it was engaging and consisted of many opportunities to interact. I felt challenged in a subject that I have previously felt confident in. Though I lacked experience in MLA format, I initially felt secure and very prepared to do exceedingly well. I quickly learned that I had significant deficits in my writing abilities. I developed new writing skills including a better understanding of the MLA format, to pay close attention to the format or instructions of the essay, and how to analyze different kinds of writings.
English was my least favorite subject. I hated reading, I hated writing, I even hated doing research. In My first semester here at Columbus State, I took an English 1100 class. In that class, I rarely came to class, turned every single paper in late, and I didn’t even show up for the final and ended up failing that course. I had to retake English 1100 in order to follow through with my Academic plans. I didn’t realize that I needed to change till after the first 2 papers of this semester. I learned that I had to learn how to manage my time, I realized that I have to start using the resources given to me, and I also had to learn to stop procrastinating.
