Reef by Romesh Gunesekera is a Bildungsroman set in the background of the Sri Lankan political coup in the year 1971. This first person narration marks the coming of age of a young protagonist named Triton. Who at the age of eleven is sent to Mr. Salgado’s household to work as a servant. “I was trapped inside what I could see, what I could hear, what I could walk to without straying from my undefined boundaries,” (Gunesekera 53). Conformed to his surroundings Triton has limited knowledge and understanding of what is going on outside Mr. Salgado’s household. He is almost oblivious to the political turmoil which was spoiling the island paradise. However regardless of religion, background, boundaries or class, no one remains an adolescent forever. Life challenges prompt an opportunity for one to find one’s position in the world.
In the chapter “A thousand fingers” the reader sees a changed Triton; we notice a passage from a naïve boy to a knowing man. He goes through a series of mental realizations about himself and his country. ‘‘Something in the air infected me too” (Gunesekera 153), indicates that he is aware of the surfacing revolution. A new era shifts in that which marks his significant awakening moment. This is a moment where he too suddenly becomes aware of the reality around him, the social and political gap between the educated and the non-educated class. Social inequality is no surprise to a colonial country, yet for naive Triton this is shocking. “I wanted to get away from all of them. Their talk” (Gunesekera 152), illustrates his understanding of his inside/outsider status. He acknowledges that he is not of the same caliber as “them”. Neither does he find interest in “their talk” which includes insulting the lower class ...

...ocial ills. He acknowledges that he was wrong to think that Joseph belongs up a palm tree. “Eat it Kolla, eat it;” this illustrates that he regrets wishing Joseph to leave so he could replace him. Had he tried to understand him rather and not judge him, maybe things would have worked out differently.
The passage of time marks his travel from childhood to adulthood and finding his social standing. Earlier in the novel he refuses to go to school but now he realizes that he opted out on a chance to be his own man. These emotional realizations are part of the reason why he nevertheless to go into exile with Mr. Salgado. He sees an opportunity to start afresh and have a chance at self-made success. This “infection in the air” awakened a rite of passage outside his “undefined boundaries”. It initiated a boy into manhood and a servant into an expert restaurateur.
