Introduction:
Waste For Life, a non-for profit organisation consisting of scientists, engineers, educators, architects, artists, designers and cooperatives aim to establish idea that develop poverty-reducing solutions to specific ecological problems. (Baillie & Waite, 2014) Waste For Life does not manage projects but effectively facilitates other groups, for example the carteneros in this case. “With this project, Waste For Life’s twin goals are to reduce the damaging environmental impact of non-recycled waste products and to promote self-sufficient and economic security for at-risk populations who depend on waste to survive.” (Insert reference of book) page 21
Students undertaking this engineering unit in stream 13 were placed into groups of five and had a goal to find a solution that will help reduce plastic waste going to landfills in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Students would be working for Waste For Life and well-developed solutions would be sent to Waste For Life. In order to provide a solution to the waste crisis in Buenos Aires, the team had to consider the social, environmental, economical and cultural aspects of context while trying to keep the design unique, simple and effective.
The specific waste product that students focused on for this context was plastic. Students had different options at their disposal to “upcycle” plastic waste. Students were able to use the Kingston hotpress that melted plastic into flat sheets, post forming plastics into products by heating it slightly and then turning it into a product and other ideas developed by students.
