I had the opportunity to work with a diagnosed Dissociative Identity Disorder patient, which is something, due to its rarity, a lot of practitioners will not get to do over their career. The learning experience gained from seeing how a person lives in multiple personalities has given me insight on predisposed beliefs about this mental illness. Prior to working with this patient, I found it very farfetched that a person could actually take on multiple personalities, until I was able to identify this mental illness as a possible coping mechanism for a traumatic event. This patient had experienced numerous traumatic events in his life, and in my opinion developed these personalities as a form of coping. The brain is such an interesting organ, and when I reflect on this diagnosis, I come to the personal conclusion that when this patient was not equipped with the proper coping mechanism to deal with his trauma and loss, his brain took over and developed the personalities to “close off” from the
This would then help the student nurses “to develop more positive, but realistic, attitudes and empathy towards people with mental illness” (Blackhall et al., 2012, pg.23). A service user is defined as “patients, carer’s and the public” (Smith et al., 2008, p. 298). The group of nursing students were to complete a questionnaire before and after they partook in their studies (Blackhall et al., 2012). This questionnaire before they started studying found that students based their judgement towards people with mental illness positively and based off their personal encounters (Blackhall et al., 2012). Three years later another questionnaire was given to the same students which found common themes (Blackhall et al, 2012).
I have created my own definition of mental health and mental illness. I believe they both have unique definitions that help explain what they are. Personally, members of my family and my friends suffer from mental illnesses, which gave me a unique view on mental illness and mental health. As a social worker, it is important to understand different mental illnesses and how to assess which illness the person may have. I believe when working in this field, I will have some challenges because people in my family have struggled with mental illnesses.
I am very interested in mental health and the care and well being of .individuals that need this assistance. I see a great need for those who are capable of helping troubled souls... Many of our disturbed youth are especially in need of some sort of mental assistance. I believe this field is wide open with possibilities. I know there is a growing need to have more compassionate, skilled, well trained, highly educated, individuals, in this field However, I now realize also, after my research, which becoming a psychiatrist is a very difficult career choice.
A. Working in the emergency room I encounter many patients who come in for psychiatric evaluation, wither it is due to suicidal thoughts or depression. Through the constant training that our hospital puts on, I have learned how to better deal with these types of patients who can be difficult at times. I have learned that something as simple as listening to a patient and just hearing them talk can help to de-escalate whatever situation that person may be in. I have also learned how to better assess these patients and help provide them with other resources that are needed, like depression related support groups or counseling.
In another article written by Hammerle in 2017 debriefing meetings can help Nursing and medical staff manage their own stress after critical incidents. Understanding and group discussion goes a long way in helping staff handle stressors. When issues do arise from stressful events people need outlets or a way to decompress and blow off steam. Art therapy has been successful in helping the rates of burnout in nurses in the study Evaluation and art therapy treatment of the burnout syndrome in oncology units. The article states that the long-term exposure to stress nurses and doctors endure in the field of oncology is treated well with art therapy.
In this case, there were numerous contradictions that existed between mental health and service practices. This was due to the fact that society was interested in mental health and in the analysis of Sociologists which was to understand theories in social relationships. These issues that surround mental illness rematerialized for Sociologists and this led consumerism with the National Health Service (NHS) and wider society to find a particularly strong voice within mental health campaigns (Pilgrim. D & Rogers. A 1999 p. xiv).
Sehar K Raza Psychiatry Residency Personal Statement Psychiatry is a complex science encompassing not only the human mind but also the body. A psychiatric patient is in dire need of attention and compassionate care and is evaluated best in the entire bio psychosocial context. Throughout my clinical rotation days, I had always been intrigued by this science. Although my training after graduation was in medicine and pediatrics, I never stopped thinking about the enormous impact mental illness had on a patient’s medical issues. Psychiatry was an unconventional route for physicians after graduation in Pakistan as the system lacked postgraduate training and employment options.
