Did you know from around 1526 to 1867 some 12.5 million slaves were shipped from Africa and about 10.7 million slaves had arrived in the Americas. If you need any clarification about what reconstruction was it was a period after the civil war and they tried to rebuild the United States back on how it was before the civil war started. The most famous people involved in this was Abraham Lincoln and after major victories in Gettysburg and Vicksburg he had a plan to reunify the North and South after the war’s end. Sadly in 1865 Lincoln got assassinated and his plans for reconstruction died off. Andrew Johnson tried using Lincoln’s plan for reconstruction. The period following the civil war, known as reconstruction, was a success due to the fact that the newly freed slaves experienced new rights, participation in society and little equality. For my first paragraph the theme is new rights for slaves and African Americans. In document A the 13th Amendment neither slavery nor involuntary servitude was accepted. In document H the Labor Contract of 1886 Fenner Powell bargained and agreed with A.T. Mial to work as a cropper for a year. Fenner Powell worked hard and Mial paid him for his labor not with money but with crops and housing. He also got bacon and two sacks of meal per month. In document F African American children could go to school. Very few african americans had the privilege to attend school in Virginia. That all changed when public schools were established during reconstruction. A lot of black Virginians were happy with free education and they liked having schools of their own, not subject to white interference.
