Freedom given then taken just like that from blacks. All because of reconstruction with north and south. Reconstruction started in 1865 and didn't end till 1877 it was a war between the confederate(South) and Union(North) to get rid of slavery for good. The north wanted to get blacks the freedom they deserved, but the south wasn’t all of it. The goal of reconstruction was to combine the north and south once again, and rebuild what was damaged in the civil war and free all African Americans. Reconstruction failed because the south resisted it, the north started to resists, and they began to have financial problem. The south caused reconstruction to fail because they resisted anything the north pushed there way. In the south, the KKK was killing anyone that was a congress member, supported reconstruction, or wanted African Americans to be free. The south created a group called KKK to kill any black or anyone associated with anti-slavery. Southern's would beat or kill any african american that wouldn't vote for a democrat.
