...sisted Reconstruction. The South used the KKK to attack the blacks that voted and participated in politics, and the KKK attacked many whites that were publically against Democrats and that supported the harsher Reconstruction plans put out by Congress. The end of Reconstruction was inevitable after the efforts of the South to resist Reconstruction because it led to the Republican’s giving up on their plans. The opposition of the south caused the Republicans to tire and this was another factor of Reconstruction’s end. Johnson also had many disagreements with Congress when they were trying to plan Reconstruction, which distracted both Johnson and Congress from actually finishing Reconstruction. This caused it to end before they could finish any of their plans. Because of all these factors, the Republicans eventually lost their will to complete Reconstruction.
C) The Negro Question was people being racist. “The blacks, as a people, are unfitted for the proper exercise of political duties.” (Richardson Doc. D) The Northerners showed racism by Justifying for equal rights. “Long enough for the black to have forgotten something of his condition as a slave and learned much of the true method of gaining honorable subsistence.” (Richardson Doc. D) The sick of carpet-bag government is people who were tired of people who went south to help freedmen and Reconstruction.(Hook Exercise) Slaves or blacks was a corruption in their government. “Sixteen African Americans were elected to Congress and numerous others served at state and local levels.”(Background Essay Par. 3) People started to lose faith. According to the Boston Evening Transcript believe that blacks couldn’t be government officials because they didn't know what to do. “Blacks needed a period of probation and instruction.” (Richardson Doc.D) Northerners lost interest in Reconstruction because the African Americans were always arguing. “Northern artist’s portrayal of the South Carolina State Legislature during Reconstruction” (Harper's Weekly Doc. D) Others may think the Southern Resistance killed off Reconstruction. My opinion is that the Northern Neglect killed off
One of the first things that happened was that groups organized to intimidate people into going against Reconstruction. One such group was the Ku Klux Klan who went around anonymously to commit acts of atrocity to those who supported Reconstruction and equal rights for African Americas. Document 2 proves that they were totally against it; it says their purpose was to “establish a nucleus around which “the adherents of the late rebellion might safely rally”.” This just shows that they were not going to accept the reformation of the South and they wanted to find as many supporters as they could. As it is known, they threatened people at polls into voting for the groups that supported their views and that caused the elections to be swayed. Document 4 is another proof of the fact that some people refused to accept Reconstruction. “Let there be White Leagues formed in every town….time to meet brute-force with brute-force….it is time for us to organize.” These groups terrorized the people and made them afraid to show their...
After the Civil War the Reconstruction Era occurred in the southern United States. The Reconstruction Era deeply impacted the south in a negative way for minority. African American were unjustly treated by the white Americans, their rights were limited and or taken away. As a result, they fought hard to obtain equal treatment as citizens. Blacks tried to fight segregation in many ways like at the ballot boxes, in the courtrooms, and through organizations like the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People. Beginning in 1873, a series of Supreme Court decisions limited the scope of Reconstruction-era laws and federal support for the Reconstruction Amendments, particularly the 14th and 15th, which gave African Americans the status
The North’s neglect and greediness caused the reconstruction to be a failure. The corrupt government, terrorist organizations, unfocused president, and ignorance were also part of the ending of the reconstruction. President Lincoln didn’t want the civil war he wanted to keep the nation together. When Lincoln went into office he wasn't planning on getting rid of slavery nor starting a civil war. Before the reconstruction era was the civil war. Many good things and bad things came from the civil war. The civil war was a war between the North and the South. The war for the north was to end slavery, but for the south it was about rights and liberty. It wasn’t until afterwards that Americans started to notice the good and the bad. Not as many people
Reconstruction was a nasty period in History. Reconstruction took place after the civil war. In the civil war there was lots of devastation. Buildings and houses were being destroyed so people needed something called Reconstruction. Reconstruction was something people really needed after the civil war because they needed to rebuild a community. Some people didn't want reconstruction because they liked destruction. Then also after the civil war slavery was abolished, as well some people don't like that either. South killed Reconstruction because South resistance had KKK, and South was murdering people.
By helping former slaves reconstruction gets better because they are tied together. When Northern Neglect got tired of helping blacks they stopped helping reconstruction grow too. The people in the North grew tired of the “Negro question.” (DocC). Public opinions in the North were changing about how they felt about reconstruction and former slaves (Doc C). One former slave was a legislature who was threatened by the KKK and the North did nothing about it (Doc B). The Republican President Rutherford B. Hayes from the North took soldiers out of the south almost granting the government a all white government. People believed that former slaves were slaves so long that they didn’t know the method of a normal person (Doc D). They said “Blacks need a period of probation and instruction.” Ignoring the African-Americans of their rights made the rebuilding of the nation fail. Rutherford Hayes ended the failing effort the North
After the Civil War was over and the Reconstruction-era began, changes were made such as the 13th amendment in 1865, which forbid slavery in the United States. Even though slavery was now prohibited, freed blacks were now left alone to struggle finding simple things like a roof to live in and a job to work for. Meanwhile, President Abraham Lincoln wanted to give the south humane conditions for them to be accepted back into the union and also wanted to give African Americans and former soldiers the right to vote, but that wasn’t very successful when put into the hands of Congress. Soon after Lincoln was killed in 1865, President Andrew Johnson came into presidency and changed the conditions giving African Americans a harder time adapting to their new lives as freedmen. Furthermore, the south became very violent against the blacks and came up with black codes, which put freed blacks as closely as possible back into a slave state. These black codes prohibited interracial marriages, the ownership of guns or liquor, congregation in large groups and had curfews for these freedmen. Furthermore, these black codes forced the freedmen to sign annual work contracts that were offensive and offered only in the agricultural f...
Reconstruction was a failure, because the North did not have a plan to rebuild the south, which lead to the newly freed slaves to be discrimination against until the 1960’s. The North passed the 14th and 15th amendments in hope that this will protect the newly freed slave’s rights. The south was able to get around those amendments, because the people in power in the South were former confederate soldier and were seen as redeemer. The redeemers in the South put into effect Jim Crow laws, which were use to step on African Americans voting rights and civil rights. The South also had sharecropping, which was white farmer would give pieces of their land to black families. The farmers would give the black families a house, and sometimes animals, seeds, and other farming tools.
Reconstruction also failed in numerous ways as well. The north didnt effectivly rebuild the the south completely and just gave it what it needed to start up again which really gave the south a slow start. Many slaves got away free during this time and because the south then had to follow the rights of the amendments their natural nature took place even after promising equality for blacks, it bothered them because they were not use to it and many groups such as the KKK and many other white supremecy groups began to scare freed slaves and push back their liberties.
The Civil War was fought hard and caused mass destruction not just physically but socially. After the South failed to be victorious, the North immediately acted upon reconstructing what was lost. Reconstruction began very strong and promising until Abraham Lincoln died and the new president Andrew Johnson overrode his 10% plan. A turn in the original plan failed to achieve the political, economic, and social effects it originally intended.
First and foremost, the South performed atrocious activities that slaughtered reconstruction. The KKK and people who supported racial dominance focused on blacks alongside Carpetbaggers, Northerners who went to the South after
(document D) People of the north, but not all, had believed that former African American slaves were unfit to be involved in politics and to be government officials. The racist people from the north said black people were unfit for politics and should be on probation from voting. They suggested them to be on probation because they had just got the right to vote but the racists thought that they were unfit because they were just slaves. Some northerner had stated that African American’s were ‘slave minded’ and they wouldn’t be right for the politics scene. These northerner’s statements were racist and made them take a step back from what they were once working for. These claims and actions lead for the north to turn against the
It was 1865, black men were tasting freedom, the confederation was defeated, the south was defeated but the unchained blacks had no real freedom. "A man maybe free and yet not independent," Mississippi planter Sammuel Agnew observed in his diary (Foner 481). This same year General Sherman issued the Special Field Order 15, in attempt to provide land for the ex-slaves. There was 40 acres of land and a mule waiting for the emancipated slaves, this gave hope for an economic development among blacks' communities. The Special Field Order 15 put all the land under federal control acquired by the government during the war to use for the homestead of the blacks. Even thought the offer of land some slave fled ...
The failure of reconstruction can be attributed to some factors. Some of these factors include the fact that the whole process of reconstruction was a government plan and therefore those people who were from the south were not for the plan. As a result, it led to the development of the racial attitudes which existed and therefore it was not easy to end it. So, when the government was trying to end racism by using reconstruction, the citizens were not for the idea and hence they remained to be racists. The other thing which contributed to the failure is that when the government stopped reconstruction process, the southern states acted quickly so that they could roll back the gains which were made by the African
