I asked myself while I was reading To Kill a Mockingbird was Tom Robinson only convicted because of the color of his skin? I think this is true because Atticus even stated that Tom was only convicted because of the color of skin. Also I think he was accused because Bob Ewell didn’t like a black man helping Mayella and finally I think the whole jury were a bunch of racist old guys that’s why I think Tom Robinson was convicted and that is because of his skin color. I believe Tom Robinson was put in jail because of his skin color not what he did the first reason why I think this is because Tom Robinson and Atticus actually got the court to believe that he didn’t rape Mayella but he was still convicted of the crime because he was an African man.

Scout’s father was chosen to defend Tom in his trial and tried his hardest providing with all the information that Tom was a innocent man. Racial prejudice is shown greatly in this novel in Maycomb County. In the court scene in To Kill a Mockingbird there is a black section and a white section, which are segregated. The colored balcony ran along three walls of the courtroom like a second story veranda, and from it we could see everything (Lee 219). That shows an unfair segregation for the blacks because they have to sit in the balcony but the whites don’t. Tom was very confused when he was accused of this incident because he had never been anything more to Mayella Ewell than an acquaintance. “The older you grow the more of it you’ll see. In To Kill a Mockingbird, it demonstrates how racism can affect one person even in the court of law. In this story, the case of Tom Robinson is told. It is obvious that Robinson is a victim of racist people that see him guilty only because of his race, African American. From the beginning, it seems obvious that Robinson does not have a chance of winning his case, whether he is guilty or not.
Therefore the colour of Tom Robinson’s skin was the defining factor in the jury’s decision. Since the jury declared Tom Robinson guilty, that reveals his fate of going to jail and eventually being killed which is obviously an injustice based on the discrimination against him.

The case in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee shows how Atticus tells the readers how narrow-minded people can be towards other races.
Firstly, Tom Robinson is a representation of a mockingbird as he was accused of raping Mayella Ewell, which he did not, in the novel. He was similar to the mockingbird in the sense that both were innocent. Tom Robinson was not guilty, he only tried to help Mayella Ewell out of kindness, saying that he actually “felt right sorry for her”, despite the fact that she was white. Tom was a man who never harmed a soul, and even risked his own safety to help Mayella, trying not to physically hurt her even when she seduced him, but rather fled as he did not want to harm her in any way. The evidences produced during the trial were more than sufficient to proof that Tom Robinson was not guilty for the rape, thus showing that he was innocent and clear of suspicion, but had to carry the blame of committing the rape. ...
Nearly the whole last half of the book is about racism. The attitude of the whole town is that Tom Robinson, because he is black and,"…all Negroes lie,…all Negroes are basically immoral beings,…all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women…"(Lee 207), will be found guilty regardless of how good a case Atticus makes for him. There was substantial amount of evidence that suggests his innocence. Even the prosecution's two witnesses' stories contradicted each other. The jury did not give a guilty verdict it gave a racist verdict. Not a verdict based on fact, but a verdict based on the color of a man's skin. This is important because the author was not making this racism up; it was what it was like in those times. She is trying to show how ignorant and blind people can be just because of differences between them, as well as how society treats racial minorities.
In the court, the director leaves out the systemic racism that Harper Lee claims is the reason Tom Robinson is convicted of rape (Dave). The racist community, and a mob of white men, make up the deciding factor of the court. However, for someone watching the movie it would not be understood that the hatred expressed towards Atticus is for supporting a black man ("Overview: To Kill a Mockingbird"). The only reason Tom loses the case is because he is black and the movie underplays this as the reason.
Everybody in the town of Maycomb looks down on Atticus because he is defending a black man in court. All evidence in the case shows Tom Robinson innocent, but he is still charged guilty because of the all white jury. The actual rapist was Mayella's father. In the end of the book, Tom is shot so that he wouldn't be found innocent.
