Reason People are Prescribed Stimulants

Stimulants are a type of medication prescribed to treat various medical conditions. A stimulant is a drug that excites any bodily function, more specifically those that increase brain and central nervous system activity (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). When stimulant medications are taken, dopamine and norepinephrine levels are increased which helps transmit signals between nerves in the brain which increase brain activity. This medication promotes the brain to be alert, increase motor activity and, wakefulness which why it is prescribed to treat many medical conditions. The reasons people are prescribed stimulants varies based on their medical condition. On the other hand, because these medications are prescribed for many conditions, they are easily obtained by people for the wrong reasons. There are many different reasons why people abuse this medication but, here are the medical conditions they are prescribed for. One of the most common conditions people are prescribed stimulants for is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or attention deficit disorder (ADD). ADHD and ADD both affect the behavior and brain activity of people. When doctors compare brains of those with ADHD/ADD to brains of those without it, this is what was said, “Brain imaging studies have revealed that, in youth with ADHD, the brain matures in a normal pattern but is delayed, on average, by about three years. The delay is most pronounced in brain regions involved in thinking, paying attention, and planning” (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). In order to help people diagnosed with this mental condition, doctors commonly prescribe stimulant medications.
