Have you ever wondered why people are so addicted to watching their favorite shows on TV? Have you ever wondered why reality TV is so popular? This paper is an explanation of why large numbers of people watch reality TV shows. Proof and facts will be provided showing that reality TV provides entertainment, inspiration, the stirring of emotions, vicarious living, and a substitute for social life for many who watch. Here are a few examples of these statements.
Both of these articles explained why people enjoy reality tv. They took different approaches and different rhetorical concepts but nonetheless described how we feel when we watch these shows. These articles were very well written and both had examples and real life situations
Whether we watch a group of people live together in a house (big brother), or watch them build the house (the Block), reality television exposes that little peeping tom in all of us. Reality TV satisfies that instinct of prying into the personal affairs of others, and the reality of reality television is that as humans we enjoy this. Reality TV is not much different from normal programs, like any program, reality television has the essentials, it has a mix of characters, it puts those characters in situation, and the result is usually a failure or success. But the catch of reality television is that the characters are real people, the story is not scripted, and with any failure or successes comes emotion. But does this reality TV revolution present the viewers with real life?
Even with my love for reality television, I do not see any entertainment or satisfaction in watching another person fight for his or her life. My cut off point for reality television, being too realistic is when another human's life is jeopardized for another person's entertainment. I am a person that loves to read. I can very easily compile the words off a page and see images in my mind as if I am watching a movie. Katniss is the character that really stuck out to me from the Hunger Games.
Our author discusses all the aspects of reality TV; from the way it captivates the viewers to the way it gratifies them. The author also appeals argument to the correct audience, which is also helps retaining the particular viewers. The author uses an aggressive tone to appeal to the audience. Some people find their escape through drugs and alcohol, but another option is reality television. Dr. Carole Lieberman, a psychiatrist, explains our enjoyment “We live vicariously through the experiences of the reality TV stars – from the safety of our own homes. We don’t actually have to risk our heart or our reputation when we vicariously live through the experiences of the reality show participants.” Reality TV gives us the freedom to daydream and fantasize of all the glamorous things we could have or do. That’s why so many people watch these programs, so they could live out their dreams through others. Similarly, Dr. Henry states, “We don’t have to think about the problems we have in our real lives and we get to weigh in on the choices and mistakes of a population that was foreign to us before the reality TV era.” Everyone has problems, and although it is unhealthy, it is always easy to put them aside.
I believe that the television programs that we participate in take part in what kind of people we are and even what we accomplish. I do not wish to bash or degrade reality television. I am sure that all of us have been succored into it once or twice myself included. While these reality programs are entertaining, what percentage of them are really realities? Some people look to television for inspiration; others want to be kept informed about their surroundings and the world. In the article entitled, “Reality TV and Culture” by Jack Perry, he argues, there are some good points to how reality television are formed and offered. Perry explains that, not all of the shows are designed to encourage and promote dangerous and unrealistic. However,
The genre is appealing to viewers because it provides them with a first-hand look into the lives of everyday people, which allows them to observe social behavior that helps them determine what is appropriate or not (Tyree, 2011, p. 397). Since the majority of modern reality stars start out as unknowns, frequent viewers of reality programming believed that fame is obtainable if they appear on a popular show (Mendible, 2004). How players of a Reality-Based show win or lose, based on the outcome of their behavior Reality television engages the viewers by providing a story line and plot similar to the way a writer engages their readers, the only difference is viewers are seeing those things played out by regular people like ourselves. According to Penn state communications professor S.Shyman Sundar the most appealing aspects of reality television is “ The power to make audience members feel like part of the action, viewers join the creative production; the experience feels less like simply watching television and more like being a part of a shared national project”. Like most reality shows, many viewers tend to pick and choose who their favorites or least favorite players are, based on the behavior of the participants. As the game progresses viewers tend to rally for the individual who’s ethical and moral odyssey results in winning the game this is accomplished not only by being a strategic player but also being a person who doesn’t cross to many unethical boundaries. While watching a show I look for what the average person might do to win, will they play in a way that makes the viewer route for them or hope for their quick departure.
