What makes a hero? Is it someone who has a spectacular outfit, supernatural powers and a mask to hide his true identity? No, not all heroes wear masks. Heroes are often portrayed as mighty men who are invincible, but a real hero is someone who can be found in everyday life. A hero is able to make rational decisions under pressure, selfless, and is always striving towards his/her goals. Victors don't need an arch nemesis or side kick to make them special, the traits that make them who they are is what causes them to be admirable. One major feature that all heroes must obtain is the talent to make reasonable decisions while pressured. When trying to make logical choices one must think of the future consequences that will come along with ones actions. Earlier in the school year my field hockey team wanted to go out to dinner the night before our big tournament game to celebrate the good season we had. That nice also happened to the night I had to study for a big math test. This math test would determine if I would get an A- or B+ for the quarter and I desired the A-. All my friends had told me to come out to dinner and that ere would be plenty of other math tests for me to ace. Just as I was getting ready to go out to dinner I started thinking about how I really want to start freshman year off with a good GPA. At first my friends were sad I would not come out to dinner but then I explained that there would be plenty other team bondings and that I was not going to miss too much. In the end, I got the A- that I needed to end the quarter and I was right when I had said I would not miss anything. By putting the results of my actions into perspective, I was able to choose the wiser path that would help me in the future. When faced with a... ... middle of paper ... ...r study for my math test I had to think about the long term consequences of my decisions and choose the one that would be more beneficial to me in the future. In addition, Welles Crowther is daring when he risks his life during 9/11 in order to help the wounded stuck in the building and not making it out of the building himself. Likewise, Martin Luther King Jr. shows true heroism when he does not let the battles of the Civil Rights movement stand in his way, and powers through to achieve his main goal of equality for all. Heroes are all over the world not just in movies, think of heroes who are in your everyday life and how you can be more heroic towards your community. Works Cited "America Remembers Heroes." CNN. So what defines one as a hero? Well, a definition of what a hero is “A person noted for special achievement in a particular field” (hero, n.d). Our concept of a hero alters drastically from person to
Throughout the years, being a hero and the ideals of heroism have been subject to many changes. Many cultures differ on their views of what it takes to be a “hero.” Such as how The Odyssey by Homer, The Ramayana, and the present day have a view on heroes. Today we look up to our men in uniform and ordinary lay people, but as children we would marvel at the abilities of the “knights in shining armor” and idolize them as our heroes. With all these different beliefs it all brings us back to one question, what makes someone a hero? Meriam Webster…defines a hero “as a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities”.
In order for a person to be considered a hero they must have a certain quality. The quality that a hero should have is bravery. All heroes should be brave because if they go into a dangerous situation, they need to be able to stand strong under the fear. “ He thought you were only brave if you knew something was dangerous and scary and you carried on regardless(Mount)”.
Generally, when a person thinks of a hero, they come across someone like Batman or Superman. These heroes have artificial powers and are not true heroes. A true hero is someone who will sacrifice their body or something possessed
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary a hero is an individual who is admired for great bravery or fine qualities. To me a hero is so much more than a person who shows great bravery. When I think of a hero many fine qualities come to mind; intelligence, courage, altruism, compassion and great bravery.
“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles” (Christopher Reeves). In other words a hero can be anyone that is determined and helps other people. A hero is someone who can face challenges with determination, who can persevere or exceed beyond expectation, but is not always buff, or strong.
A hero is someone who can portray courage when faced with a particular problem, able to assist others in certain ways and give them strength when faced with life's difficulties. In modern society, it is difficult to identify someone another individual can look up to as a hero. It takes a special person and quality to for others to follow and look up to without worrying that they can be led astray. A hero is someone who is able and willing to fight for everyone's freedom and to lay his life down for others (Kazin, 2013).
Now, to explain the definition of hero. A hero is a person that has skills of nobility, strength, and brains. If someone is going to be a hero having these qualities would come in handy because a person needs to be a strong individual to be able to make it through wars and be able to be smart to think of where the places would be to hide while in war. Making the most important decisions is also part of what a hero does because they are the people who are supposed to protect everyone else. “Tragic Hero.” Dictionary.com. Dictionary.com, n.d. Over the course of history the definition of what makes a hero has made many changes. Beowulf, Superman, and firefighters are all examples of heroes, but they are very different when broken down. Today’s society defines a hero by his values, his strength, and his journey.
What I personally believe makes a hero, is a person that is brave and courageous. Courage is one of the biggest characteristics you need to be considered a hero. Heroism is all about how far you’ll go to protect or serve the people and how far you go is all about how much courage and bravery you have to take such quality to the next level.

One of the ways I see a hero is by someone being a catalyst for society change. That shows someone making a difference in life. One example shown is by Sherman Alexie where he talks about growing up reading books at home in Superman and Me. Most of the people in the reservation he grew up in didn’t feel like moving up in the world, Sherman was different than the others due to the reason that in his world a very smart Indians shows a lot of danger in their society for that even today tribes believe that “a smart Indian is dangerous” (Alexie 294). The danger of intelligence in their society means that either that they’ll no longer be a part of their society or that they could try to take over parts of their society.
Movies have evolved a great deal since the days when a couple fighting scenes and a small love story satisfied audiences. Today movie plots are much more complicated and have much more action, thanks to modern day technologies. Although these new technologies seem to make movies increasingly complicated, some crucial roles in movies will never change. One thing that has remained constant in the film industry is the role of the hero. No matter what the genera of the film and or when the film was made the hero’s always share similar characteristics and are put through similar series of tests to prove their heroism. When these tests are completed it seems to pull everything together in their films. Although the hero Shane in the movie Shane and the hero Ripley in the movie Aliens are from two separate generas and are also from separate time periods, the hero’s in each movie share characteristics and are put through similar tests that make them, in theory, one in the same. Heroic characteristics start to become evident right from the start of each of the movies.
There is an ever growing dispute in society where some people view others as heroes either when they physically put themselves in danger to defend a cause or to safeguard others, or when they say what they are thinking out loud when others are not brave enough to do so. The recognition of a hero should go to those who are able to stand up for others against the oppressors or conflicts in society by voicing their opinion and by stating the opinions of the people who do not have the courage to do so. However, some may believe that heroes are those who seek danger to protect others or a cause, an example being a firefighter or cop who goes into work every day to protect the people in society, even though they know their lives are in stake. The articles, "Inspired by a hero: What Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life means to me" by La Prensa, "Profiles in Greatness - Gandhi" by Success, and "Nelson Mandela, hero to the world" by New Pittsburgh Courier, support the claim that heroes are those who are the voice for the voiceless. There has been many people in history who have put their lives at stake due to their courage to stand up for others, an example being Martin Luther King, Jr.
When I think of a hero I immediately think of someone who is strong, intelligent, handsome, and daring. Upon closer examination, many different qualities than these become apparent. Courage, honesty, bravery, selflessness, and the will to try are just a few of the overlooked qualities of a hero. The definition of heroism changes with the context and time. Heroes of the past are not necessarily heroes of present time and vise versa.
