I have learned so much and have bettered my writing and reading skills. I also have increased my vocabulary and learned to read and understand what I read. To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic novel written by Harper Lee. The novel is set in the depths of the Great Depression. A lawyer named Atticus Finch is called to defend a black man named Tom Robinson. The story is told from one of Atticus’s children, the mature Scout’s point of view. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, the Finch Family faces many struggles and difficulties. In To Kill a Mockingbird, theme plays an important role during the course of the novel. Theme is a central idea in a work of literature that contains more than one word. It is usually based off an author’s opinion about a subject. The theme innocence should be protected is found in conflicts, characters, and symbols.
“Often fear of one evil leads us into a worse”(Despreaux). Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux is saying that fear consumes oneself and often times results in a worse fate. William Golding shares a similar viewpoint in his novel Lord of the Flies. A group of boys devastatingly land on a deserted island. Ralph and his friend Piggy form a group. Slowly, they become increasingly fearful. Then a boy named Jack rebels and forms his own tribe with a few boys such as Roger and Bill. Many things such as their environment, personalities and their own minds contribute to their change. Eventually, many of the boys revert to their inherently evil nature and become savage and only two boys remain civilized. The boys deal with many trials, including each other, and true colors show. In the end they are being rescued, but too much is lost. Their innocence is forever lost along with the lives Simon, a peaceful boy, and an intelligent boy, Piggy. Throughout the novel, Golding uses symbolism and characterization to show that savagery and evil are a direct effect of fear.
Reading and writing became a problem for me because I was not acquiring the knowledge as a second language learner. Being a second language learner was difficult because learning another language that is not my own was hard to comprehend. At home I spoke Hmong more than English and I found that my native language had impacted my English learning. My English literacy became broken and I used wrong tense and verb as I try to communicate with others. The reason was that I rarely communicate in English with my family, friends, or teachers because I am usually with my mother. Hence, me and my siblings picked up Hmong more than English since my mother at the time was illiterate and could not encourage me or my siblings to read and practice our literacy skill. Instead my siblings and I were encouraged by our parents on knowing how to read and write in Hmong. My parents enrolled me and my younger siblings to an afterschool program to learn Hmong because they wanted us to be educated and know where our linage came from. Hence, being stuck in between two languages was a concerned for me because both languages were different and did not correlate with each other. For example, the dialects, forms, and along with the sentences and grammar structures were different. For as long as I can remember learning how to read and write was a real challenge for me. When I first arrived in the United States I was enrolled at the nearby elementary school. Being from another country I was scared and embarrassed because I was different then the other children in my class. Talking and communicating with others was something that wasn't in the interest of what I wanted to do. I sat far away from others depriving myself of what they were doing or learning. Coming from Mexico and going to a school where no other children would speak the same language that I would or even play the way I did made me believe that I was some sort of thing that didn't belong. All these contributed to a low esteemed child that was unable to communicate. The world I was in suddenly became a place that I didn't know. To the kids and others in my class I was an illiterate person.
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
While being enrolled in my English 112 DL07 composition class, I have faced some challenging situations. For instance, writing a rhetorical analysis is not as straightforward as one would imagine. There are several strategic techniques that need to be implied; there is also planning, note-taking, forethought, and prewriting. On the other hand, I overcame this tough situation by taking the appropriate amount of time to get my thoughts and ideas together to create a rough draft. I believe I do fully understand what is academically expected of me for this term. This may sound like sarcasm, but it is the truth, I enjoy writing, and analyzing essays. Writing is a passion and stress reliever to me there is nothing better than writing an essay. Achieving
A reflective essay is a narrative form of essay. Such essay includes author’s personal experiences, memory, point of view and the reflection on the significance of those recalled memories. These are the main elements of reflective essay. Comley states, “your own experience and memory will be your primary source for reflective essay”. In the reflective essay, the author relies on his/her personal experiences and memory to support the main idea of the essay.
Author James Joyce has written many short stories which were composed to explain Dublin’s way of life. The book is known to his readers as Dubliners. His short stories have been written to help readers understand the many different feelings that were established in Dublin during a time of crisis. During this time in Dublin many changes were occurring and the city was rebuilding from the tragic potato famine and certainly rebuilding as a country. In three certain stories, “The Sisters”, “An Encounter”, and “The Dead,” the literary symbols of escape and journey appear within individuals which are always trying to run from the problems of society. These actions taken help understand why the characters have feelings of escape and run from the society of Dublin in this era. Certainly, in all three stories the major theme expressed can be determined when individuals try to escape society and the reality of Dublin.
My first experience to literacy came as a young adult. I have always been reluctant with my education, because of the family problems I experienced growing up. The harsh treatment our family received growing up made it very difficult to study in school, my body was physically in class but my mind was not. The trials and tribulations I went through growing up as a kid continued throughout my teenage years. Dropping out of high school I believe brought upon literacy difficulty. At the age of twenty-three, I finally had enough of feeling undereducated. Living in my mother’s basement with no job and an 8th grade education, the walls started to close in on me as my frustration became greater by the minute.
Throughout this semester, I was able to learn many writing skill and was able to develop as a writer. When I found out that I was scheduled to be in English Composition I, I was very nervous as I have always felt that writing was one of the skills that I needed to improve on. Although I usually received good grades on my essays, I did not like writing them since it would always take me more than five hours to write a one page essay. If I wanted a good grade in English Composition I, I knew that I was definitely going to have to improve on my grammars. The main skills that we learned in this class were writing a clear thesis statement, paragraph structures, and sensory details. Through this class, I was able to attain more knowledge in these areas and gain confidence in my writing skills. One of the most familiar issues when it comes to the relationships between children and parents are the lack of understanding and communication. Parents fail to properly relay what it is they want for their kids, and children neglect to listen or explain their emotions to their parents. It’s simpler to continue to fight with each other than to properly take the time to resolve the root causes of the fighting. From what I have been taught, analyzing literature takes and depends on multiple factors. Since numerous components go into the process of analyzing one's work, the individual should expect the procedure to be complicated. Analyzing includes scanning the text and understanding what the author is trying to portray. The author, to complete his book or other literary folios, made individual choices and chose them for a reason. Literary analysis of his work would require for the reader to dive into his thoughts and decipher the significance of his decision.
There are many different types of events that shape who we are as writers and how we view literacy. Reading and writing is viewed as a chore among a number of people because of bad experiences they had when they were first starting to read and write. In my experience reading and writing has always been something to rejoice, not renounce, and that is because I have had positive memories about them.
