What Is The Misuse Of Technology In Fahrenheit 451

Technology is everywhere, in our homes, at work, at school, and even in our pockets. Many people in the world depict the rise of technology and technological advancements such as phones to be ‘dumbing down’ thecommunity as depicted in Ray Bradbury’s book Fahrenheit 451, and these people are right to some extent. Bradbury’s book tells the story of a society where books are outlawed and people watch television and do ‘fun’ activities’ all day. Technology has dumbed humanity down so much that the characters in the book believe that the people on screen in the television are sentient, that they are their family. This future could happen, but it won’t. The technology has been dumbed down, there is no real learning, no uses for technology other than …show more content…

According to Clarisse, during school they sit and watch ‘ educational’ programs all day, these programs are not like documentaries in this time period, “they just run the answers right by you” (Bradbury 27). The program has no student input in an era where television should have interactive features. In areas like Africa where there is less education opportunities and less books and materials due to them being expensive, it is reasonable to think that technology would be an answer to the education crisis, but electricity is expensive and hard to get in the African savanna. Even the universities in Africa are lacking books because “they are produced in Europe so the end user in Africa has to pay more”(Spinks). People can’t even afford the books needed to get the education they deserve, low-end schools probably use what they can and it ends up that they are just running answers by the student because they don’t have the materials to show the learner visually. Many new battery-efficient and solar powered tablets have been released as educational tools for people in Africa that can supply the learning to students without Wi-Fi. These new”tablets come preloaded with a mix of the Kenyan curriculum and international content”. This gives the students the joy of learning without technology or the distractions that some devices have, such as ipads. The need for extra stuff such as Wi-Fi and …show more content…

This device is a mechanical dog just called the hound, and is used to track down people with books, which is a crime if someone has them. It is incredibly good at it 's job and is classified as a “ rifle that can fetch its own target and guarantees a bull’s-eye every time”(Bradbury 25). The hound always catches the criminal when ordered to. A similar scenario is happening in Africa where illegal poachers are killing off large amounts of rhinos for their horns. A man named Tom Snitch’s goal is to use UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), also known as drones, to track down the poachers and save the rhinoceros population. The workers will obtain knowledge on where the poachers have already strike and “Plug it into a mathematical formula. This data will include the weather, the number of poachers working, and exactly where they were in the park” (Tribune). The new drones are going to help, using data, to take down terrorist organisations and hopefully restore the rhino populations. This technology is in very urgent need, rhinos are a very endangered species and “it is estimated that one animal is being killed every 11 hours in [South Africa] alone.” The drones will be a helpful tool on keeping this endangered species alive, and hopefully help other endangered species that are dying from poaching as well. All and all, the rhino population will hopefully be safe and
