One out of three African-American women will become a victim of rape in their lifetime. (Starling, 1998) Rape is a subject that many people do not like to talk about and many incidents go unreported. Rape is put into three different categories; Date Rape, Marital Rape and Sexual Assault. Victims of rape are not subjected to just gender, race, or age group it happens to men, women, children, and the elderly. Many people do not realize the change in a person’s life after being raped or sexually assaulted. Rape victims experience emotional, psychological, and physical changes. What is rape? Rape is sex that you do not agree with, including forcing a body part or object in a person’s vagina, rectum, or mouth. They can occur among strangers or
An example would be if a man goes out on a date with a female, they have a great time and later decides that he wants to have sexual intercourse with her but she refuses, and he says that he doesn’t care and takes it anyway. These types of rapes are hard to prosecute because it’s usually he say she say , he can deny that it was rape and say that it was consensual, some women feel guilty , embarrassed, or in complete disbelief that it happened and they get of the evidence, or do not report the rape right away. Some women are even drugged and may not even remember what happened the night before. A common drug that is used for rape is Rohypnol. (Meadows, 2014) A lot of rapist uses Rohypnol because it is colorless and odorless. Another common rape that is hard to prove is Marital
Most women do not report marital rape for various reasons; they may not want to lose their husband because he is the financial support, she doesn’t want to see her husband go to jail, they have kids, or simply because she feels like it would be a hard case to prove simply because they are married. The bottom line is rape is rape and it doesn’t matter if you are married if you say “no” and they insist it is rape. Marital rape doesn’t have to be abusive it can simply be him violating you in your sleep, and you wake up to unwanted intercourse that is still considered
Rape is a virus that infects every nation, culture and society. It is constantly referred to as “the unfinished murder”, because of the deep state of despair the rapist leaves the victim in. There is no common identifiable trend that determines who will be a rape victim. Women are not assaulted because of their attitudes or actions, they are attacked simply because they are present. With rapists, just as with their victims, there is no identifiable trend. The old myth that only “sick, dirty, old, perverted men” commit rapes is a lie that society tells itself in order to sleep better at night. The startling truth is that most rapists work under a veil of normalcy. In order for the percentage of rapes to decrease, we have to change our ideas about rape and let go of the old myths of the past. And until this happens, rape will continue to plague our world at large.
In what is sure to be a very solemn matter for all American students and their families across the country , in January 2013 , President Obama, the office of the Vice President and the White House Council on Women and Girls converged and issued a renewed call to action against rape and sexual assault report which analyzes the most recent reliable data about this issue and identifies who are the most in peril victims of this malefaction, investigates the costs of this violence both for victims and communities , and describes the replication very often inadequate of the US malefactor equity system.
This kind of rape is recognized as rape in courtrooms, where simple rape is dismissed as not real rape and it is more common that the offender will be found not guilty. Rape can happen to anyone. Women from different cultures, races, ages, and economic levels are all vulnerable. It does not matter who you are or where you live, although women of the lowest status are most vulnerable to rape, and so are Hispanic and African American women. Anderson.... ...
Rape culture can be seen all around us, it's on TV, in movies, in grocery store checkout lines, in schools, and even in our own words we use every day. According to Elizabeth Plank, who has experience in behavioral science, "The easiest way to describe rape culture is by comparing it to the nasty gum stuck under your shoe: You don't always see it, but you know it's always there." Rape culture does not fit into one simple definition, it is a multitude of words, jokes, actions, and lifestyles that promote or joke about sexual violence.
In general, rape means force or threatening to use force to a potential victim. It includes vaginal but doesn’t exclude other forms such as, anal and oral penetration. Rape tends to get grouped with women but, there are also men who get victimized as well. It’s not limited to heterosexuals either there’s also homosexual offenders (“Sexual Assault”). It is very common and it usually goes unsolved (Triffin). Here is a cause and three effects that helps prove this is an important issue.
While it is popularly associated that rape involves a kidnapping of some type by a criminal that the victim has never come in contact with before, this belief has been disproved over the years by the number of cases of acquainted rape, also known as date rape. Date rape is forced or coerced sex between partners, dates, friends, friends of friends, or general acquaintances, often with the illegal use of drugs to alter the state of mind of the victim. Recent statistics show that the most common form of rape is date rape, which comprises 78 percent of all rapes. Rape itself is a very common occurrence, with one in four girls falling victim to an attempt before they are 25 and three out of five of these rapes occurring before the victim has reached eighteen. Not to be forgotten, men as well can be and have been sexually taken advantage of without their consent, either by other men or, in limited cases, women.
Rape is variable in its types and definitions. It is defined by Merriam-Webster as the action of forcing someone to have sex with a person by the threat or use of violence. According to Lois Pineau, rape is best defined as nonconsensual sex that involves the male penetration of a woman that is not his marital partner (Pineau 452). There are also several types of rape that include: date rape, gang rape, statutory rape, prison rape, etc. However, Pineau’s focus is on date rape and its problems about if it really occurred or not. Date rape, according to Pineau, is “nonaggravated sexual assault” or nonconsensual sex that does not include physical injury or its threats (Pineau 452). Pineau addresses several issues within her essay. She describes the problems that arise when attempting to classify whether or not date rape has actually occurred. She also argues that communicative sexuality is a successful tool in defining date rape. Ideally, she is stating that women, implicitly of course, want to be raped and that they lead men onto the idea.
Rape is not just an action against an individual, but a violent crime that can scar a life
What do you think and feel when you hear the word rape? Do you feel uncomfortable? Maybe even angry? Your certain feelings and emotions towards this word is a result of rape culture. Rape culture, essentially, is how a society as a whole sees and reacts towards rape or instances of rape. In 2013 rape was defined by the FBI as, “Penetration… of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.” (Division’s Crime Statistics Management Unit 1). The definition was finally changed after the old definition deemed inappropriate by today’s standards, which beforehand, stated that physical force needed to be used for rape to be considered rape. This is good news for men and women who have been fighting for the definition to be changed, but unfortunately this does not mean that state laws are being changed the same way. Even though the FBI may acknowledge the older inappropriate definition, most states do not. Sexual assault is a commonly unreported crime, where only an average of 36% of sexual abuse is actually reported to the authorities (Planty 7). Some forms of rape can include physical harm, threats, and even death of the victim, and most victims do not want to tell others for fear of criticism, self-blame, or even the fear that their attackers will carry out on their threats. In many cases, victims do have a reason to be afraid. When someone is brave enough to come forward and say they were sexually assaulted, they are putting themselves in the position of being in not only a long legal process, but also having their motives questioned and misunderstood, which is the last thing they want after their experience. The legal system in the United States...

Sexual assault is a traumatic event that can cause extreme psychological effects on the victim. These effects can be short-term, and they can manifest themselves into long-term effects, depending on the individual and how the sexual assault occurred. Victims of sexual assault can be either male or female, with both sexes having fairly similar psychological effects. In addition to these psychological effects, some individuals develop Rape Trauma Syndrome or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which can be more easily classified as short-term versus long-term responses. Every individual is different and may differ in their reactions to this event; there is no normal or common way to react (Kaminker, 1998, pg. 23).
Rape culture is an unnoticed problem in today’s society, and is much larger than most people think. American society allows for victims to be unjustly blamed, and the statistics are shocking. One in four women and one in six men will be sexualy assaulted in their lifetime. On a darker note, one and every seven victims of sexual assault is under the age of six. Rape is an unjust situation that needs to be resolved. One way to solve this problem is to teach society that rape is wrong.
In many rape situations, the victim is raped by an aquaintance, therefore the victim is less likely to report the rape. “About 15 percent of college women report having been sexually assaulted; more than half of these assaults were by a person that the women was dating.”(Kimmel 233) If more than half of the sexual assaults and rapes are commited by a person that a women is dating or at least knows, then the people that are the rapists are the everyday Joe’s walking down the street, not the psychotic rapist that women are on the look out for. “Moreover, 20 to 50 percent of women have sustained sexual coercion at least once while dating.”(Burke et al 272) This statistic shows that when women are in a relationship they are much less likely to report a rape. “Women tend to...
Marital rape is unwanted sexual intercourse performed by a spouse. Often time’s marital rape is a more than one time occurrence. Marital rape is associated with abuse; it can often involve physical abuse and emotional abuse between husband and wife. Marital rape can be just as violent as stranger rape.
