Recommended: The effect of rap music on youth

Rap is widely renowned for telling stories of drunken parties and crazy hook-up’s, but believe it or not many rap songs have deeper meanings than many may actually realize. Songs like Mask Off by Future give rap a bad credit, especially considering the hook of the song consists of just “percocets, molly, percocets,” and “mask on, f*** it, mask off.” The entirety of the song is about taking different drugs and partying, and unfortunately these types of rap songs are the types that are played on the radio. Because of this, paired with the heavy useage of profanities, rap has a stigma of partying, drugs, alcohol, and sex. It is widely believed that “the Rap industry is dominated by artists' who mostly dedicate their lyrics to either violence, drugs, or sex” (brightkite.com). While some rap songs fit this stereotype, a large amount of songs include emotional narratives that can often explain a situation someone is going through. According to the National Music Bureau, “65% [of listeners of rap] live in run-down homes, or impoverished areas, usually being inner cities” (brightkite.com). In addition, “teens are drawn to the fantasies of wealth, glamour, and sex appeal in rap videos”(Livestrong.com); since the majority of rap fans are living in inner cities, they are able to use rap songs to escape their realities and dream of a better life. This also allows for “rap [to offer] a creative outlet and a way to connect with peers” (Livestrong.com). This only proves that rap is beneficial despite the foul language or inappropriate topics because it allows teens to escape their possibly rough lives and fantasize about a place where life is full of exhilarating events and astonishing amounts of

DJ Kool Herc popped in his new record playing smooth rhythms of jazz and blues with the integration of Jamaican sound creating a new genre that would soon sweep the nation. He called it Hip-Hop. Some would call it “black noise”, but to urban African Americans it was music they could own; music they could learn to appreciate and adore. As they faced afflictions like racism, oppression, drugs, and much more, they used this new found hip- hop to express their thoughts and feelings. Today, we try to understand where this passion and substance in rap has escaped; if it was left to wither in the blazing grass, or blow away in the fresh air.
