Even people who are not familiar with the hip-hop genre recognize it when they hear it. A pre-2005 hip-hop music hit can be easily recognized if it were released within the last decade, and artists who have gotten into the music industry within the last ten years have little understanding of, or connection to, what was ordinary for hip-hop artists in the 20th century. The hip-hop and rap industries have changed immensely from the 20th century to the 21st century, particularly when it comes to the lyrics or language content. This content of hip-hop lyrics has become much more violent in recent years relative to the late 20th century. Many studies (e.g. Anderson, Carnagey, & Eubanks, 2003) have documented the violent and misogynic lyrics. The Johnson et al. (1995) write that some critics of rap music believe that rap lyrics help shape attitudes and behaviors regarding the appropriateness of violence against women. Now, in current times, women are freely using foul and degrading language just like men rappers. With this being said, research has been found to prove that women rappers and male rappers equally use the same foul language throughout their songs. This brings a negative connotation among women since the public originally didn’t have this view of women. There is no refusing that hip-hop culture, which includes not just rap music, but also it is found that Djing, break dancing, and graffiti artists, etc–is distinctively driven by a black male dominate field. If rappers take away all the violence rappers could bring are often considered "sweet” if they distance themselves from the “macho” self-image and assertive representations of women. Hip-hop artists may also use such harsh and violent lyrics to gain commercial success. However, in the more modern times, audiences wanted more violent and intense music and in turn that is what was commercialized and came to the surface and women’s image was sacrificed while success in the industry started.
