The effects nature has on individuals Not many individuals see what nature is able to do because they do not take the time to understand nature. People who are able to understand nature and understand life relationships are called transcendentalists. Some famous transcendentalists are Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Walt Whitman. These transcendentalists transformed their ideas into poems that were not like any regular poems. Nature has a big effect on individuals because it reveals the truth, lets individuals see who they really are, and helps with an individual’s personal life. “Standing on the bare ground my head bathed by the blithe air and uplifted into infinite space all mean egotism vanishes. I become a transparent eyeball; I am nothing; I see all.” (Emerson pg. 390) This shows that Emerson was so close to nature that he became part of it and now he knows more about himself after the experience. Emerson is saying that everybody can learn more about themselves when they become really close to nature. Although Hester was not close with nature, nature approached her. “As she attempted to do so, the sunshine vanished; or, to judge from the bright expression that was dancing on Pearl’s features, her mother could have fancied that the child had absorbed it into herself, and would give it forth again, with a gleam about her path, as they should plunge into some gloomier shade.” (Hawthorne pg. 126) This shows that Hester sees that she is a disgrace to the world. Nature approaches her by the sunshine, when she reaches out for it the sunshine goes away. That tells Hester who she is and how people see her.
