Isotopes are elements that have the same atomic number but different mass numbers due to a difference in the number of neutrons. Radioisotopes are radioactive isotopes that have unstable atoms and different numbers of neutrons in the nucleus, but the same number of protons and chemical properties (3). Some radioisotopes that are used in fighting breast cancer are Iodine-131(beta), Strontium-89(beta), Samarium-153(beta), Radium-223(gamma) and Lead-212(alpha) (11).

Radiotherapy is used to fight against breast cancer. It is the use of high-energy particles or waves, photon radiation (x-rays and gamma rays) or particle radiation (electrons, protons, neutrons, alpha particles, and beta particles) to destroy or damage cancer cells (10).

Radiotherapy destroys cancer cells by damaging the DNA within the affected cells (2). Normal cells are also affected by radiation, however, they are better at repairing themselves (1). In radiotherapy, X-rays are produced by a machine called a linear accelerator which affects the treated area as shown in the picture on the right. Radiotherapy is a specialized treatment therefor it is not available in every hospital. …show more content…

Internal radiation uses a radioactive source which is inside the body or near the tumor and destroys cancer cells (2). External radiation uses a machine which directs high-energy rays from outside the body into the tumor
