My style model is an opinion article written for The Telegraph by Chris Radburn on the topic of inheritance tax. The Telegraphs’ demographic audience of people, on average, are aged 61 (according to the Telegraph media report). They are well educated and are also interested in current affairs. This is shown by the topic in hand ‘inheritance tax’ as it is an issue that the audience has possibly faced from their grandparents or parents passing away, or even if they are in the process of writing their own will. Radburn has positioned his audience accordingly, he uses low-frequency lexis such as the abstract noun ‘decree’ which is an occupational lexis belonging to the law and politics semantic field. By doing this would not limit the audience …show more content…

Radburn did this by his heading which was 'The best way to help people pass wealth to their grandchildren is to scrap inheritance tax '. By using the superlative adjective 'best' demonstrates that he has the solution to this issue. I decided that I would use a similar technique; I used the powerful present participle of 'destroying' in my headline. I feel that this demonstrates the urgency of the issue, and creates a hard hitting idea that our society is in this present predicament.

Radburn and I have similarly represented our topics as in a state of urgency. Radburn uses the subordinating clause ‘that by some estimates make today’s young people the first in history to be poorer than their parents'. I think this is a good technique to use for subheadings as it assigns the topic to the upcoming paragraph. It also allows the reader to think about the subtopic and answer the main question of the paragraph in a simplistic matter. This rhetorical question also acts as an ultimatum and directly asks the reader what they would prefer and the obvious answer would be the noun phrase ‘more money’. I think that this puts perspective the simplicity of the solution and subtly persuades them to agree with this opinion as it is a logical thing to want. I have also used anaphora ‘Change needs to happen and change needs to happen now’. I think that by repeating the abstract noun ‘change’ which implies that there is still time. However, the use of the adverb 'now' shows the urgency of the matter. I have used synthetic personalisation in order to make the reader feel like they are included in this issue and it affects them. For example, I have used the 2nd person pronoun ‘you’, as it allows the reader to feel like they are directly affected by the underfunding. This may subtly make them want to change to happen as we all want the best for ourselves and people around us. Radburn also uses the 2nd person pronoun ‘you’ in order to make the reader feel included in the
