My style model is an opinion article written for The Telegraph by Chris Radburn on the topic of inheritance tax. The Telegraphs’ demographic audience of people, on average, are aged 61 (according to the Telegraph media report). They are well educated and are also interested in current affairs. This is shown by the topic in hand ‘inheritance tax’ as it is an issue that the audience has possibly faced from their grandparents or parents passing away, or even if they are in the process of writing their own will. Radburn has positioned his audience accordingly, he uses low-frequency lexis such as the abstract noun ‘decree’ which is an occupational lexis belonging to the law and politics semantic field. By doing this would not limit the audience …show more content…
Radburn did this by his heading which was 'The best way to help people pass wealth to their grandchildren is to scrap inheritance tax '. By using the superlative adjective 'best' demonstrates that he has the solution to this issue. I decided that I would use a similar technique; I used the powerful present participle of 'destroying' in my headline. I feel that this demonstrates the urgency of the issue, and creates a hard hitting idea that our society is in this present predicament.
Radburn and I have similarly represented our topics as in a state of urgency. Radburn uses the subordinating clause ‘that by some estimates make today’s young people the first in history to be poorer than their parents'. The use of the prepositional phrase ‘in history’ make this sound very economically threatening and is it has never happened before it is the fear of the unknown. I have said ‘the seriously underfunded NHS sector’ and by the ‘adverb seriously emphasizes the degree of importance in achieving a satisfactory

I’ve learned this from Radburn's article as he does the same by using a simple sentence ‘how does this work?’. I think this is a good technique to use for subheadings as it assigns the topic to the upcoming paragraph. It also allows the reader to think about the subtopic and answer the main question of the paragraph in a simplistic matter. This rhetorical question also acts as an ultimatum and directly asks the reader what they would prefer and the obvious answer would be the noun phrase ‘more money’. I think that this puts perspective the simplicity of the solution and subtly persuades them to agree with this opinion as it is a logical thing to want. I have also used anaphora ‘Change needs to happen and change needs to happen now’. I think that by repeating the abstract noun ‘change’ which implies that there is still time. However, the use of the adverb 'now' shows the urgency of the matter. I have used synthetic personalisation in order to make the reader feel like they are included in this issue and it affects them. For example, I have used the 2nd person pronoun ‘you’, as it allows the reader to feel like they are directly affected by the underfunding. This may subtly make them want to change to happen as we all want the best for ourselves and people around us. Radburn also uses the 2nd person pronoun ‘you’ in order to make the reader feel included in the
If anyone ever gets down about the way things are “in the present moment” at this time, perhaps they should try to fathom the plights of other races such as the Jewish in the holocaust, and the masses of casualties with the destruction of European countries in World War II, an then maybe they could see a glimmer of light “at the end of the tunnel”. Oh my, what a wonderful world that we live in today, with our founding fathers being led by God, to give us the precious freedom that we truly experience “in the present moment”.
discussed the rhetorical skills in the writing styles and analysis. The main components of this learning was to be able to differentiate and understand the ethos, logos, and pathos appeals associated with the particular feeling and help develop understanding. Using the ethos, logos, and pathos appeals the writers and speakers can convince their readers to some image or understanding regarding the group or association. Every one of us is associated with different discourse communities that have different specialties and meaning. Everyone must have to learn the ways the communities interact with their members and how the communities understand a person from outside the community. Being outside from the community there is need to learn regarding

A rhetoric analysis can be defined as the breakdown of components used to make a persuasive argument or judgment on a particular subject or topic. The ability to make a conclusion or decision on a given thought or idea in a moment of seconds is a result of rhetorical analysis. “Because media rhetoric surrounds us, it is important to understand how rhetoric works. If we refuse to stop and think about how and why it persuades us, we can become mindless consumers who buy into arguments about what makes us value ourselves and what makes us happy”. In Carroll’s essay “Backpacks Vs. Briefcases: Steps toward Rhetorical Analysis”, she discusses the nature of rhetorical analysis, how it affects our everyday lives and explains the role context plays.
In a letter to his former law professor and fellow delegate to the Continental Congress, George Wythe, Thomas Jefferson wrote, “I think by far the most important bill in our whole code is that for the diffusion of knowledge among the people. No other sure foundation can be devised for the preservation of freedom, and happiness” (“Letter to George Wythe”). While this accurately reflects his deeply held conviction that education was existentially integral to the American democratic system, it is not as well-known as his 1802 letter to the Danbury Baptist Association. It was in this letter that he proclaimed that “believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man & his god… the whole American people… declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between church and state” (“Letter to
... potential than it ever has before. As stated by Michael Cox and Richard Alms in their book Myths of Rich and Poor, the “average American’s spending on services has risen 83 percent since the early 1970s” (Source D). There are more booming businesses and economic surpluses than ever before. The opportunities are there, and if only citizens and leaders would look around for them then prosperity will only grow in the United States and beyond. Sometimes maximizing potential is as simple as creating a training hockey team for children born in the second half of the year, and sometimes it may require the restructuring of an entire government. But the important thing is that there is no way to know something is possible or not until it is tried, and even this simple awareness can shift both individual people and entire societies from simply “good” to the best of the best.
I. First Argument: More and more families are falling behind because the minimum wage has not kept up with the rate of inflation.
The purpose of a persuasive text is to change or alter the viewpoint of the reader for it to agree with the author’s perspective. The intention of this specific text is to persuade the reader to help end poverty today by joining ‘Make Poverty History’ and it uses persuasive language and techniques to do this – this essay will explain the effect on the reader and will focus on analysing persuasive language.
My intended audience is anyone who is passionate about gender inequality or interested in that type of topic, the purpose of my piece was to inform people about a issue which is everywhere is this modern day world, As you can see my piece is a informative essay about gender inequality I have chosen this form because I believe it has a major part in the novel animal farm, the nature of the link is when the pigs (Napoleon, Squealer and Snowball) decide that they want the milk and apples to themselves so they tell the other that the milk and apples is good for there health this represents a strong link with gender inequality, the language I am using is informative and persuasive, it is appropriate/relevant to how the pigs in animal are not being

One of the biggest challenges I faced was truly understanding what it was to rhetorically analyze an article. The easy part was reading it, writing a summary, and even choosing the rhetorical choices the author used. However I struggled with being able to explain and show evidence of how the author used the rhetorical devices in their arti...
Taxation has evolved throughout history as a method of funding government functions. The US government began taxing its people by imposing tariffs on certain items such as liquor, tobacco, sugar, and legal documents. Currently, there are taxes on almost every function. The IRS regulates income tax laws, central appraisal districts control property tax values, and there is a state sales tax on most purchases across the country. Taxes are difficult, if not impossible, to avoid. Benjamin Franklin stated “'in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes” (Isaacson 463). Revenues from property taxes are used to fund public schools, hospitals, and local governments. I will discuss the history of property taxes and compare the Texas property tax rate to the rest of the country. Property taxes are more efficient than income tax and a better way for local governments to collect revenue from taxpayers.
For instance, in one article, the newspaper reported that "The son of the former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is accused of funding an attempted coup by mercenaries to overthrow the ruler of an African nation and replace him with an exiled opposition leader, in return for a lucrative oil contract. " The use of the discursive marker allows the text to flow, making the sentence long, detailed, and complex. These key facts indicate that the article is aimed at capable readers. There is hardly any controversial language due to the informative focus. It is obvious that there will be more technical jargon like 'lucrative', 'coup', 'mercenaries', and 'exiled' due to the newspaper's complex sentence structure.
The Estate Tax, known as the ‘death tax’ as well as the ‘anti-birth tax’, has been one of the most controversial parts of the United States tax code since its introduction in 1916 (Cagetti & De Nardi, 85). The estate tax is a tax imposed upon assets transferred at the time of the estate holder’s death. Those opposed have named it the “death tax” as they claim it hurts business activity as well as job creation. However, according to those in favor, the estate tax is an effective way to tax the richest few, and redistribute their wealth, thereby narrowing the gap of inequality. For those in favor, an abolition of the estate tax would impose a “birth tax” of sorts onto the majority of Americans who have not inherited a large sum of money (Cagetti & De Nardi, 87). The controversial estate tax in the United States is often questioned by many and has been challenged time and time again. However, more emphasis has typically been put on particular aspects of the tax code where points of dispute are found.
