All through time, the world has been racist and intolerant of people different from themselves. Countless millions have suffered due to the bigotry of people that couldn't understand change or differences among one another. There was a time when any soul that wasn't blue eyed and blonde haired in Germany, anyone with darker skin where immediately classed as inferior and not human. Even now, when you are not aware, racism is still a considerable problem. But sometimes it isn't one person being racist against another, but rather one person being racist against them self. The movie crash shows good examples of how racism against oneself, caused by fear and misunderstanding, is just as malevolent and evil as racism against another person. Fear is what makes people act racist. Farhad is one of many examples in the movie of a person who recognizes his own race and paralyzes himself through his own fear. Farhad believes that since he is Persian he is immediately being persecuted against and cheated. He flips out at the gun shop when the owner was insulting him which just furthers his fear of Americans. After the events on 9/11, which are referenced a lot in the movie, Farhad thinks that anyone who is Middle Eastern isn't welcome in America. Even after the gun shop owner was rude; his shop was destroyed by racist people who hated him. It is this same fear of being cheated because of his race that makes him very untrusting to people he doesn't know. He calls a lock smith to come fix his door because it won't lock. He immediately thinks that Daniel is trying to cheat him and steal money from him just because of his past endeavors.
According to Newman in Sociology: The Architecture of Everyday Life, a social class “consists of people who occupy similar positions of power, privilege, and prestige” (Newman, 2012). Someone’s position in a social class can affect “virtually every aspect of their lives, including political preferences, sexual behavior, religious affiliation, diet, and life expectancy” (Newman, 2012). The social class that was represented in the film was the middle-class. The show, Pleasantville, portrays the 1950s in which the wife would stay at home cooking and cleaning while the father works. This showcased white women's passive indifference to racism in America.Her history of hunting down Black people to return home is a reflection of Black men being fetishized in modern society. She sees black people as just items, she was basically shopping for a physically-enhanced slave. Even Though, in the beginning of the movie she seems to defend her boyfriend from first the cop, and her parents second. It later on discovered that it was all an act that she was a part in. It’s hard to tell if she actually enjoys being intimate and sexual with black men or just following the orders of her family.
There has always been a difference in the way minorities are treated in comparison to the higher class or those of a lighter color. Minorities have a social disadvantage due to the stereotypical image portrayed by the handful of criminals within their group. In the movie, Fruitvale Station directed by Ryan Coogler, Oscar Grant, a twenty-two-year-old black man living in San Francisco, is shot and killed during his arrest at Fruitvale train station. Although the incident occurred in 2009 and the movie was released in 2013, it exemplifies the current social and political injustice against minorities.
The history of African Americans in early Hollywood films originated with blacks representing preconceived stereotypes. D.W. Griffith’s 1915 film, Birth of a Nation, stirred many controversial issues within the black community. The fact that Griffith used white actors in blackface to portray black people showed how little he knew about African Americans. Bosley Crowther’s article “The Birth of Birth of a Nation” emphasizes that the film was a “highly pro-South drama of the American Civil War and the Period of Reconstruction, and it glorified the role of the Ku Klux Klan” (76). While viewing this film, one would assert that the Ku Klux Klan members are heroic forces that rescue white women from sexually abusive black men. Griffith introduced “mulatto, faithful mammy, Uncle Tom, and brutal buck” character; some were disguised as villains and obnoxious individuals. Donald Bogle’s “Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies, & Bucks” describes the brutal black buck as “big, bad niggers, sexed and savage, violent and frenzied as they lust for white flesh” (13-14). Some of the film’s most objectionable scenes depict black men trying to rape white women and Negros destroying the south however, the Ku Klux Klan is riding to the rescue. Bogle also recorded some scenes in the film that presented blacks as a joke. For instance, Bogle reaffirms that “freed Negro legislators are depicted as lustful, arrogant, and idiotic: one bites on a chicken leg, another sneaks a drink from a liquor bottle, and another removes his shows during legislative meetings” (12).
Though recent studies have shown that this is not just in the U.S. but worldwide (el-Aswad). In Flight Patterns William is always describing and joking about the many different stereotypes and unfortunate events that can and might happen to him since 9/11. He talks about the way his skin, eyes, and hair look, also how, “[he] should have worn beaded vests when he traveled…and maybe have brought a hand drum and sang” so people will know that he is Indian and not judge him (60). But when the taxi driver questions him on his nationality he is slightly offended but he moves on because he had racially profiled him because of the scar on his neck earlier. Things like this occur because though it might not be the original intentions, “Ideas and images circulate in media frequently enough to then have effects, such as producing fear, in viewers” about the different minorities in our country, especially Muslims in this post 9/11 world
Nothing translates the modern depiction of southern literature quite like the novel, Forrest Gump. Set in the deep south of the fictional town of Greenbow, Alabama, Winston Groom’s Forrest Gump gives the audience an adequate insight into how the southern way of life was in the late fifties through the seventies. The majority of the movie shows important events during American history at the time. Although this is an essential part of the storyline, the novel itself gives readers a much more in-depth look into southern life. Forrest Gump notes the racial references related to that time period, the portrayal of classic southern culture, and allows southern stereotypes to be apparent throughout.
Racism is a prevalent issue that has plagued society for hundreds of years. In fact, racism and discrimination in the United States has been a major issue since the colonial era. Nonetheless, the Spike Lee directed film Do the Right Thing, released in 1989, explores the theme of racism in a masterfully juxtaposed and politically driven story about tensions between an Italian family and local Bedford-Stuyvesant residents on a hot summer day in hopes of illuminating New York City’s racial climate during the time. Analysis of the film reveals that police violence and animosity between races were at the forefront during this period, which relates to the social expectations theory and the accumulation of minimal effects theory.

Dating back to the beginning of times people have always been looked at different depending on the color of their skin or what your religion, race, or beliefs may be. It is in our human nature to not like people for certain things that they are. Many will argue that in this day in age we are no longer at a race war but how can you be so sure when you actually open your eyes and see reality.
