Will this dilemma come to a halt? In the world today, racism and discrimination is one of the major issues being faced with. Racism has existed throughout the world for centuries and has been the primary reasons for wars, conflicts, and other human calamities all over the planet. It has been a part of America since the European colonization of North America beginning in the 17th century. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exist in our schools, workforces, and anywhere else that social lives are occurring. From schools, to work places, to even restaurants, racism is there because we, ourselves have constructed it but, not everyone can see it through their own eyes because we were all born with different perceptions. In Racism Without Racists by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, racism is described in a variety of different ways whether it is due to biological factors or simply by saying that racism does not exist and people just need to work harder. Bonilla-Silva has experienced discrimination himself and he wrote this book to show that even though it is not extremely visible like before, such as segregation, it is subtler but still plays just as big of a role in our society as before.
In today’s world, people would like to think that racism no longer exists, at least not in the way it use to exist in the past where the people could be lynched or beaten or arrested just for the color of their skin. Many people have no idea about the level of racism that we are in today. People may imagine that everything is fine and opportunities are available for whoever wants them, but things are not fine and opportunities to attain a better life are difficult to come by. Individuals who experience racism can realize the level in which the world stands today. It might not be as clear as it was, perhaps, during the time of slavery, but if we open up our eyes we will notice that it is still everywhere. Injustice and discrimination although it does exist on both places is much more severe in my home country in Venezuela that it is in the United States. At this point in our history it’s sad that certain humans think they’re superior to other races because of their skin color or religion. This idealism evolved from prejudice and ignorance of another culture and the inability to view another human as equal. The establishment of race and racism can be seen from as early as the Middle Ages through the present. The word and concept, racism, is something that the majority of people in American society fear to talk about or to discuss. Race is a touchy subject and a problem that people try to avoid. However, after reading Beverly Tatum’s “Defining Racism” in Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? and Peggy McIntosh’s article, “White Privilege and Male Privilege,” I started to re-examine my perception and definition of racism. I wonder how race influences my world as a white, female, heterosexual, and what role it plays in American society.
We have a long history of racism in America that has been structured to favor White people. Structural racism can be defined as, “a system in which public policies, institutional practices, cultural representations, and other norms work in various, often reinforcing ways to perpetuate racial group inequity. White people will believe that black people have a lot of problems because their culture is bad or they have bad values. This goes to show that some people are remarkably narrow-minded, and they won’t even let people of a different race work at their company, so these foreigners or people of different skin color lose the opportunity of finding a job that can support them. It is obvious that racism is bad as it was many decades ago but it sure has not gone away. Racism very much exists and it is about time that people need to start thinking about the instigations and solutions to this matter. Many people believe that it depends on if a person was brought into the world as a racist or not but that is not the case at all. In fact, an individual cannot be born a racist but only learn to become one as they grow from child to adulthood. It was the most harsh thing anyone has ever done; at the end of the day she thought we couldn't afford our things because we were black.
Racism is a huge social problem in the world today. Many races today are being discriminated for being a certain race. Racism has been a social problem for a quite long time now, and it is still a social problem. The vast majority are being discriminated because of a certain group of a race, or person, done something that was awful, but this does not mean the whole race is to blame for the actions of others. Other races are looked down upon because of the color of their skin or maybe because they look very different. Racism has led up to genocide because one group fears another, or because of the way a race looks. A person who is racist is not born racist, they are taught to be racist or they see other people being racist, and they want to
