Racism: The Grand Obstacle of Society’s Advancement

In our society today, there are still a voluminous amount of instances of racial discrimination. It can vary from a trifling slur to severe verbal mistreatment. There is discrimination everywhere such as public schools, jobs, and generally anywhere you can consider. One would ponder that after approximately one hundred and fifty years since the abolition of slavery, and fifty years since the civil rights movement, we wouldn’t have the exact problem that still forays us today. Two of the most known illustrations of racial discrimination occurring would be at work and in the public school system, even if most people do not want to accept it. An exceptional solution is to inform people about equality and to set a code of conduct that should be followed and enforced by all. Imagine a person of color applying for their dream profession. After conquering every obstacle that was pitched at them, they finally gained the perfect amount of qualifications. Just as they begin to believe in themselves, it is stripped from them. How? Another person who wasn’t of color did not have as much credentials as the person of color but they seemed like a better candidate. Why? Don’t ask me. Ask the individual who is giving the job. Now this may seem peculiar and uncommon but in actuality, it takes place on a daily basis. This situation should not be happening because each individual in this world is identical and must not be adjudicated by the pigment of their skin. An example of this situation is in Nathan Place’s article, “Because You’re Black.” In this article, Jamilah DaCosta was denied a job in a bakery because the owners were afraid she would scare away the customers.
