Taking on Racism Racism has been a problem since before you and I were born. Racism in the workplace can cause lowered pay, aggressive behavior, and overall bad feeling in the minds of the person affected. This can become bad for the employer and society. Racism still plays a part in certain workplaces when it comes to people getting the job that they would like. Learning how to deal with racism during these situations can also be challenging. When looking for a job, you would want a job that is going to treat you equality and fairness as everyone else. Racism in the workplace has caused many problems in different ethnic groups. Many people have deal with racism in the workplace. If you were to ask a random person is racism in the workplace is wrong, they would most likely tell you that it is. This is a common response. People are discriminated in the workplace for many reasons: race, color, sex, religion, or national origin. The top three are disparate treatments, disparate impact, and racially hostile work environment. Disparate treatment is one of the most common. This means that a person who was in a similar/same situation was treated differently because of their race, gender, age, and other personal dealings. When dealing with disparate impact, it can be very tricky to prove your case. Disparate impact is when an owner states that you have to have a certain degree to work in their workplace. This degree can be as simple as a high school degree. The degree that everyone is supposed to have, affects one racial group over another. Is so, then this could be a case of disparate impact. The last type of racial discrimination in the workplace is racially hostile work environment. This would include racial slurs, jokes, offensive behavior, and anything else that would affect them employers’ life. (Fenner)
