The novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is well known for the unique classic literature, which captivated the audience. Many people would agree that this book produces fine literature, others might say that this book is racist and discriminates colored people. According to “Taylor schools expel Huck Finn” by Detroit news stated that “The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn has been pulled from classes in taylor because of complaints about its liberal use of common racial slurs” (Detroit news) Although the novel might constantly use the word “Nigger” it still provides the reader a story about a young white boy named Huckleberry Finn, who had an adventure with a runaway slave by the name of Jim. Huck Finn consciously debates on whether to turn Jim in or proceed to their adventures. For example, Huck is contemplating on a decision and thinks to himself “I was a-trembling two things, because I’d got to decide, for-ever, betwixt two things…” (Twain 213) At this point in the novel, Huck is deciding whether to send Ms.Watson a letter informing her that he knows where Jim. When Huck made his decision, he picked based on his heart while ignoring his conscious thoughts. Huck said to himself “All right, then, i’ll go to hell” (Twain 213) As soon as Huck made that decision, he tore up the paper. Huckleberry Finn now developed a unique bond with Jim which didn’t follow the society’s norm. This provided the message that everyone can develop a relationship, Huck demonstrates the sinful act that society does not agree with, this ultimately help readers realize that not everyone had a negative heart. The article “Should Huck be on the shelf?” By Robert Reese mentioned “Mark Twain was using his novel to show how friendship was strong enough to overcome prejudices, not to promote racism” (Reese) Robert Reese does agree with the book and helps his audience realize the truth about the novel. During Huck’s adventure with Jim, he came across many people that were against colored people. For example Huck meets two men attempting to capture slaves, “Right then along comes a skiff with two men in it with guns” (Twain 89) At this point Huck starts to feel a special bond with Jim, therefore Huck made a sinful decision by lying to the men. From this point in the story, readers are able to tell that Huck is starting to develop. Robert Reese mentioned in his article “Should Huck be on the shelf” that “Friendship does not need to be banned from our society” (Reese) He is claiming the fact that the main point of the story is promoting friendship not racism. Throughout the novel, satire is being utilized. As the audience can visualize, Huck is developing this unselfish act of kindness which is amazing for a young boy. He overcomes the idea that Jim is a “Nigger” and develops a bond like no other. While Huck is having an adventure of his life, other people in the society attempts to keep the racial discrimination going. For example, towards the end of the book Jim is captured by Silas Phelps. In the novel one man said “It was an old fellow- a stranger- and he sold out his chance for him for forty dollaz..” (Twain 211) In this part of the story, the audience can see that the slaves are treated as material objects, and this is morally wrong.
