CANADIAN YOUTH ARE FACING RACISM AND DISCRIMINATION
Have you ever walked through a crowd of people without a single thought of being judged by others? One simply does not think like that. Youth all over Canada are facing this problem. There is no way for us to believe that we can simply ignore the thoughts of being judged because it is not human nature. It occurs all around the world and no matter how much you try to block it, it would still be at the back of your mind. People can be judgemental on many things, whether it is for what you are wearing or what you are skin color may be. However, racism never stops in Canada. When it comes to multicultural people, who have different values and beliefs, there is always conflict. Racism plays a big role in teens lives this generation. Whether it would be with a different race fighting against each other or even sometimes their own race fighting against each other. Teens could ruin other teens lives with negative thoughts about one’s culture. Not only does racism affect the single human being, but it could also affect the whole society. The society will blindly follow what one says without understanding the naked truth. Not always is that true, however, it can happen. In 2011, bullying caused 198 teens to commit suicide . People do not take things, such as being racist to one another, as seriously as they should. A 15 year old muslim teen got bullied everyday and got called a terrorist just because he was muslim. As a result, that 15 year old teen beat up the bully, leaving him with a broken nose. Even after the the teen defended himself, more people walked up to him and called him a terrorist again for beating the other guy up. You see, this cycle of racism goes on and on forever. If this cycle does not stop, people will always just go against different cultures. Therefore, they are always trying to be more superior. Racism as a component in the Canadian societal context has prevented the realization of truth and justice throughout history. For instance, Donald Marshall Jr. endured a wrongful conviction as a result of racism in the criminal justice system. While this dilemma has proved to be most difficult for minority groups to overcome, critical race theory, as implemented by defence lawyers in R.D.S. v. The Queen, has allowed for the realization of racism as truth in Canadian society and provides a tool for minority groups in future legal battles.

Through different texts such as “I am not racist” and “I’m a Banana and proud of it” multiculturalism may not be a beautiful thing after all. Before we talk about the laws that Canada has put into motion to help combat racism we must first define what racism is. The term Racism is hard to define. Racism is more then just an attitude; it is a policy or practice of persecution or domination by one group over another. Due to this explanation the word racism is not found in statutes or court decisions to the same extent as the word discrimination. Discrimination in the ordinary sense of the word means to treat a person or group differently because of prejudice. However in the legal sense this definition had been expanded to include human rights. Systemic discrimination has been a part of Canada’s past. Women, racial and ethnic minorities as well as First Nations people have all faced discrimination in Canada. Policies such as, Charter of Rights and Freedoms, provincial and federal Human Rights Codes, as well has various employment equity programs have been placed in Canada’s constitution to fight and address discrimination issues. Despite these key documents placed for universal rights and freedoms Aboriginal and other minority populations in Canada continue to be discriminated against. Many believe there is no discrimination in Canada, and suggest any lack of success of these groups is a result of personal decisions and not systemic discrimination. While others feel that the legislation and equality policies have yet resulted in an equal society for all minorities. However, while the Canadian government has developed a broad-based multicultural mandate that includes a national human rights code and increased penalties for hate-motivated crimes, and most Canadians oppose overt forms of discrimination and hate, racism continues to exist in Canadian society, albeit in a subtle fashion.

Racism is one of the world’s major issues today. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exists in our schools workforces, and anywhere else where social lives are occurring.
