It used to be said that everybody was equal. One said it was separate but equal. Does this really mean that everybody is equal? Well, back then this meant that all of the upper class white men were equal. They had to own land and have quite a bit of money. The problem with this was that African Americans were left out. One knows they were left out because everything was segregated, including schools.
In “One Friday Morning,” Nancy is not given a scholarship because she is colored. This was before all the cases about segregation. Even then, when the cases did pass and have amendments made, the people of the towns did not follow them. In the Brown V. Board of Education case they said, separate but equal has no place when it comes to education.” When people had schools segregated it diminished blacks. African Americans are no longer slaves and they deserve the same schooling that everybody else gets. When the children feel diminished it can “affect the motivation to learn, and slow down his or her mental and educational development. This means that children would not have an equal opportunity to succeed later in life.” The south did not like the idea of integration.
A group of black children went to school in the south and had to have the military escort them into the building. The city then tried to get the courts to delay integrating the schools. The city asked for a two and a half year delay of integration because of violence in the school. This was not the only town that asked for this. There were plenty of southern towns that gave a long list of reasons as to why they wanted to wait to make the school integrated. ... were made to help African Americans, not everybody followed through with them. There were ways to get around these laws and the courts allowed it. To take someone’s scholarship away because of their race is not making the separate but equal true. Racism is not equality of all. It is putting certain people into groups and discriminating them while making them feel worthless.

Equality is something that should be given to every human and not earned or be taken away. However, this idea does not present itself during the 1930’s in the southern states including Alabama. African Americans faced overwhelming challenges because of the thought of race superiority. Therefore, racism in the southern states towards African Americans made their lives tough to live because of disparity and inhumane actions towards this particular group of people.
(Nugent, p. 116) The amendment granted woman’s suffrage, and was the fruit of many years of labor of several women’s rights groups, such as the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and prominent women’s rights activists, such as Susan B. Anthony. The amendment expanded the bounds of popular democracy, bringing attention to women who felt increasingly ignored as participants in the political system (Piott, p. 166). Segregation is the act of setting someone apart from other people mainly between the different racial groups without there being a good reason. The African American’s had different privileges than the white people had. They had to do many of their daily activities separated from the white people. In A Lesson Before Dying there were many examples of segregation including that the African American’s had a different courthouse, jail, church, movie theater, Catholic and public school, department stores, bank, dentist, and doctor than the white people. The African American’s stayed downtown and the white people remained uptown. The white people also had nicer and newer building and attractions than the African American’s did. They had newer books and learning tools compared to the African American’s that had books that were falling apart and missing pages and limited amount of supplies for their students. The African American’s were treated as if they were lesser than the white people and they had to hold doors and let them go ahead of them to show that they knew that they were not equal to them and did not have the same rights or privileges as they did just because of their race. The nineteenth amendment is the right for women to vote no matter the color or way they are. But it led to women's suffrage movement which was women trying to get the right to vote. Which was followed by many rights that they were given but it wasn’t given

In the 19th century women began to take action to change their rights and way of life. Women in most states were incapable to control their own wages, legally operate their own property, or sign legal documents such as wills. Although demoted towards their own private domain and quite powerless, some women took edge and became involved in parts of reform such as temperance and abolition. Therefore this ultimately opened the way for women to come together in an organized movement to battle for their own rights in such ways as equal education, labor, legal reform, and the occupations. As stated in the nineteenth amendment, a constitutional revision that established women’s citizen rights to vote.
However, this is not an equal treatment. The legal analysis of the school segregation should have been in complete violation of the 13th and 14th Amendment, but because of the Plessy case, segregation was unfairly accepted. Jon looks to the future to be positive for African Americans. Because of Heart of Atlanta Motel, Inc. v. United States, Brown v. the Board of Education of Topeka, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, African Americans would finally get away from the tyranny they faced and end segregation. It is unfortunate that the African American people were still mistreated after the enactment of the 13th and 14th Amendments.
Many challenges had to be faced during the Civil Rights movement of the 1950’s; one of those challenges being the case of Brown v. Board of Education, which tested the ruling in the case of Plessy v. Ferguson back in the year 1896 proclaiming segregation to be constitutional as long as it was “separate but equal”. In this particular case, Thurgood Marshall claimed that forcing African Americans to used separate education facilities was violating the 14th Amendment which gave the right of equality to all citizens under the law of the United States.
“In 1943, indicates separate facilities for black customers at a bus station in Rome. Segregation of blacks and whites became a common occurrence in the South with the rise of Jim Crow laws in the 1890s. In the 1890s, Georgia and other southern states passed a wide variety of Jim Crow laws that mandated racial segregation or separation in public facilities and effectively codified the region's tradition of white supremacy” (Hatfield, 2013). Segregation -which means to be separate but equal – was one way the south avoided blacks’ rights. Some examples are: they weren’t permitted to go to the same schools. Colored children had to go to certain schools even if there was a white school down the road. Another example is blacks’ had to use different restrooms and different drinking fountains. Here’s another example: they also had to go to certain restaurants and stores. In the summer most of the places blacks had to go to weren’t air conditioned. They couldn’t even ride in the same railroad car as white people. They weren’t even allowed to be buried where a white person was buried. Blacks’ weren’t permitted to marry a white person. Black children weren’t even permitted to have the same textbooks as white children. The textbooks were not interchangeable, the school that had the book first got to keep it. Mary Mebane used her own experience on the bus to show how segregation affected her life. Mary Mebane points out, white people “could sit anywhere they choose, even in the colored section. Only the black passengers had to obey segregation laws.” When Mebane was young, she saw a conflict on the bus. The driver asked a black person who sat in the ‘no-man’s-land’ to move back to colored section to give the seat for the white person who was standing on the bus because the bus was full. Segregation on the bus represented how white people unequally treat black people. When black people refused this driver to move, the driver try to send them to police. Black people were living in the shadow of racism and segregation at that time. However, that situation still affects school system and community now. Mebane asserts, “It was a world without option.” Black people have lower economic and social status because they are restricted to a small box because of segregation. “In Six Decades After Brown Ruling, in US Schools Still Segregated”, Dexter Mullins claims that in some schools like Valley West Elementary School in Houston, about 90% of people are not white people. The entire Women’s Movement in the United States has been quite extensive. It can be traced back to 1848, when the first women’s rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York. After two days of discussions, 100 men and women signed the Declaration of Sentiments. Drafted by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, this document called for equal treatment of women and men under the law and voting rights for women. This gathering set the agenda for the rest of the Women’s Movement long ago (Imbornoni). Over the next 100 years, many women played a part in supporting equal treatment for women, most notably leading to the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which allowed women the right to vote.
