In the United States, society likes to think of itself as progressive and modern, open to many differences. The country was founded on the American Dream. The American Dream did not specify what a person 's skin color had to be in order to achieve success. It was the simple belief that through hard work an American could attain success and prosperity. Time and time again the United States has proved its acceptingness to a diverse amount of people. There are communities of racially diverse people living together and peacefully interacting. Americans see this interaction and some people will think that they are living in a utopian society where everyone is equal. While there are others that know this is not the complete truth, they know the other side of the story because they have lived it first hand. Racial discrimination is not just the paranoia or an overreaction of a person of color. It is the statistically proven fact that people of color are at a disadvantage in the workplace. They have a low employment rate, which goes back to potential employers judging an applicant based on the prejudice and bias associated with their name. Those other people of color that do get hired are less likely to move into a higher position of power due to the harassment they often receive that does not allow them to do their best work. The disadvantages also include a large racial wage gap where people of color are making less than white people for no other reasonable explanation but that they are of color. People should not be facing so many difficulties in the workplace based on a characteristic that does not affect one 's working ability. A person 's skin color does not represent who they are as a worker. An employee should be valued based on their effort, service, and the dedication they have to their job and
America has always been a country with different cultures, races, and people. Only, not everyone has been accepting of different kinds of people. A persons thoughts on another person can differ depending on a person's race, gender, or age. In Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mockingbird, racial equality is nonexistent. The African Americans were treated like they weren’t people, and were totally isolated from the Maycomb, Alabama society. America will never achieve true racial and social equality because people are ignorant, have a history of being prejudiced, and are unjust.

In today’s world, the American still has barriers to overcome in the matter of racial equality. Whether it is being passed over for a promotion at the job or being underpaid, some people have to deal with unfair practice that would prevent someone of color or the opposite sex from having equal opportunity at the job. In 2004, Dukes vs. Wal-Mart Stores Incorporation was a civil rights class-action suite that ruled in favor of the women who worked and did not received promotions, pay and certain job assignments. This proves that some corporations ignore the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which protects workers from discrimination based on sex, race, religion or national origin.
Consequences for acts of racism in the workplace should be included. Employees from all races and ethnic groups should be hired to create a diverse workforce. Job candidates must be informed of the policy against racism and discrimination in any workplace before they are hired. Employees should be promoted based on merit without considering race or other irrelevant factors. This creates a system of fair promotions that way all employees feel valued. While both race and gender have very real societal and, in some instances, personal consequences which enables both to be categorized as real neither race nor gender is more real than the other. An ethnically diverse workplace is very common due to equal rights and minorities are now given the same chance as white people. Since this country is made up of many diverse communities, it is impossible to walk down the street without seeing someone that has a different ethnicity than yourself. In the workplace it is very common to have co-workers that are of a different ethnic background than yourself as well. I believe that it is a huge benefit to work with people from a different ethnic background. I have been able to open my eyes and relate with people that are not white. Some people are still close minded about the idea of working with a person of a different race; I believe that is ridicules considering the amount of people of different races in America today. Prejudice and discrimination have both been prevalent throughout human history. Prejudice deals with the inflexible and irrational attitudes and opinions that are held by others of one group against those of another. There are both positive and negative forms of prejudice, however, the negative form of prejudice leads to discrimination.
