Race in America - Why it Still Matters? One would not want to live a life if they knew their chances of reaching their goals were almost certainly downsized or marginalized by their race. Well, sadly this is the case for Blacks in America. Blacks are often found to be, at the bottom of the racial hierarchy in society. America is expected to be “The land of the free, and the home of the brave,” in addition to allowing all citizens equal opportunity. However, in a harsh reality it is not, but instead the land of the incapacitated, and home of the Whites. Institutional racism is when institutions such as schools, corporations, and government give poor treatment to groups of people based off of race. The fact that institutional racism still occurs is a reason race still matters in America. Races are not genetically different; all humans are the same. However in America, it is frequently perceived that race somehow equates to the level of someone’s intelligence. In spite of some Black’s high intelligence levels, they are less likely to get higher positions in corporations. Frequently minorities make less money than their white peers, especially women of color. It is not because they do not know how to lead, because it is evident that minorities are more than capable of leading, but is a direct result of racial discrimination and the lack of opportunities provided to them. Historically, whites keep them as less powerful by restricting education. This is still happening today, “ [Minority] Students in racially, ethnically and economically isolated schools are condemned to institutions with fewer resources, fewer experienced, certified teachers”(Parker). Even though we have witnessed a portion of Black people rising up such as Barack Obama, Lebron James, there are still a lot of Blacks suffering from enfranchisement, torture, and double standard of law. Being a developed and powerful country, the issue of racism is worth noticing. The critical part of the issue is that law seems ineffective to protect poor Black people. That’s why so many Blacks are powerless when bullied by people like police or associations like Ku Klux Klan. So it is crucial to consolidate the law to keep Blacks’ personal rights from being violated. Besides, we need to stress the education of Blacks, especially those in poverty. One of the reasons why Blacks have been treated unequally to Whiles is because they did not contrite as much to the nation as Whites, and education inequality could partially account for this result. Race and ethnicity is a main factor in the way we identify others and ourselves. The real question here is does race/ethnicity still matter in the U.S.? For some groups race is not a factor that affects them greatly and for others it is a constant occurrence in their mind. But how do people of mix race reacts to this concept, do they feel greatly affected by their race? This is the question we will answer throughout the paper. I will first examine the battle of interracial relationship throughout history and explain how the history greatly explains the importance of being multiracial today. This includes the backlash and cruelty towards interracial couple and their multiracial children. Being part of a multiracial group still contains its impact in today’s society; therefore race still remaining to matter to this group in the U.S. People who place themselves in this category are constantly conflicted with more than one cultural backgrounds and often have difficulty to be accepted.
Race as a factor in inequity. Ladson-Billings and Tate (1995) posit that race continues to be a significant factor in determining inequity in the United States. Race matters in society. If we look at high school drop out, suspension, and incarceration rates of men of color in America we see a disproportionate amount of men of color marginalized and profiled by society. This is further compounded by the perception that male faculty of color cannot be educators or at least are not often conceptually visualized in that capacity (Bryan and Browder, 2013).
Institutional racism is defined in the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) as “the manifestation of racism in social systems and institutions. It is the social, economic, educational, and political forces or policies that operate to foster discriminatory outcomes. Across the nation, millions of Americans of all races turn on the television or open a newspaper and are bombarded with images of well dressed, articulate, attractive black people advertising different products and representing respected companies. The population of black professionals in all arenas of work has risen to the point where seeing a black physician, attorney, or a college professor are becoming more a common sight. More and more black people are holding positions of respect and authority throughout America today, such as Barack Obama, Colin Powell, Condelezza Rice and many other prominent black executives. As a result of their apparent success, these black people are seen as role models for many Americans, despite their race. However, these groups of black people are exceptions to the rule and consist of only a tiny fraction of all black Americans. These black people in turn actually help to reinforce the inequality of black Americans by allowing Americans of other races to focus on their success. A common thought is, "They made it, why can't you do the same?" The direct and truthful answer to that question is Racism.
Since the beginning in the United States, African Americans have been seen as racially inferior and White Americans have been trying to keep them that way for many years, especially in the south. This can be seen when the south implemented the Jim Crow Laws in the 1930’s to the 1940’s. These laws were laws put into place in the south to refute African Americans 14th and 15th rights; to keep African Americans racially inferior. However these laws were fought very hard by African Americans even though they were being put down they still found a way to rise up and change America by fighting back for what they believed was right and not giving up. Published in American Educational Research Journal, this paper gives insight into how racial diversity stretches beyond educational engagement and social composition. The significant difference made by diversity-related efforts, such as hybridized racial interactions and policies is fully explored. The findings of the study presented can be generalized to the argument of institutional racism as this piece presents rationale against it. The limitations of paper is the insufficient detail regarding educational context needed to illustrate the steps institutions can take to apply diversity.
In the “Between Barack and a Hard Place” by Tim Wise, Wise explains institutionalized racism in the categories of income and jobs, housing, education, health care, criminal justice, and Hurricane Katrina Response. Institutional racism is the pattern where blacks and people of color have given some negative treatments based on their race or skin color. Wise gives some key points and statistics in each areas that disproves the idea that people have equal opportunities in the United States. In terms of income and jobs, Wise shows unequal opportunities for applicants with black-sounding names: “Job applicants with white-sounding names are 50 percent more likely to be called back for a job interview than applicants with black-sounding names.” (Wise
Different from racism by individuals, it reflects the disparities regarding criminal justice, employment, housing and education. Individual racism consists of overt acts, it can usually involve things such as violence, death and destruction of property. This form of racism is obvious and can be pointed out instantly. Institutional racism, on the other hand, is less overt and very subtle. Institutional racism usually occurs within respected forces in society, thus, cannot be confronted in an obvious manner. An example of individual racism would be if a black family moved into a white neighborhood and someone damages their property. An example of institutionalized racism would when black families are forced to live in urban cities and are not allowed to buy homes in white neighborhoods per say. Educational institutions are also an example of institutionalized racism because in many private colleges, diversity was not present, the emphasis on diversity in colleges has only recently become a phenomenon. “It is harder for a white college student to understand the need that minority students feel to band together against discrimination” (Waters, 1996, 236). Throughout history, African Americans have encountered an overwhelming amount of obstacles for justice and equality. You can see instances of these obstacles especially during the 1800’s where there were various forms of segregation and racism such as the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan terrorism, Jim- Crow laws, voting restrictions. These negative forces asserted by societal racism were present both pre and post slavery. Although blacks were often seen as being a core foundation for the creation of society and what it is today, they never were given credit for their work although forced. This was due to the various laws and social morals that were sustained for over 100 years throughout the United States. However, what the world didn’t know was that African Americans were a strong ethnic group and these oppressions and suffrage enabled African Americans for greatness. It forced African Americans to constantly have to explore alternative routes of intellectuality, autonomy and other opportunities to achieve the “American Dream” especially after the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were passed after the Civil War.
Black people are paid almost half of what white people are paid, which forces them to live in low income communities which tend to be unsafe, and also put their whole family in danger. Due to their low income, they might not be able to afford health care which causes them to “lose more work because of illness, have more carious teeth, lose more babies as a result of both miscarriage and infant death…” according to William Ryan from Blaming the Victim page 648. People who have low income due to the wage gap tend not to be able to afford college compared to white people, which hinders their future and their ability to succeed. In fact, on page 214 in Shades of Belonging: Latinos and Racial Identity, Sonia Tafoya states “Hispanics who identified themselves as white have higher levels of education and income and greater degrees of civic enfranchisement than those who pick some other race category.” This shows how minorities are mistreated in society unlike white people. In the end, it doesn’t matter what your abilities are because if you are not white you are not treated equally. “If you’re not white, you’re black,” (141 Sethi). Anyone who is not white in the United States are seen as inferior. If you’re not white, you 're not treated as an equal. Non-whites are judged based on their appearance and are made fun of due to their accents. Numerous non-whites are harassed and are told “you are in America, learn how to speak English!” When in fact, there is no official language of the United States. According to Sonia Shah in Asian American? on page 217, Asians are paid less in the workforce even when they have the same level of education as whites. Temporary inequality exists as a means of “improving” a subordinate to the level of a dominant. After the period of inequality is over, the two view each other as equals. The other form of inequality, permanent inequality, exists solely because of an ascription of inferiority to a subordinate that is inherent and unchangeable. Unlike temporary inequality, there is no possibility of improvement for the subordinate; they are, in the eyes of the dominant, inferior and impossible to “fix.” The dominants, who view themselves naturally superior to the subordinates, begin to take advantage of the subordinates. “Out of the total range of human possibilities, the activities most highly valued in any particular culture will tend to be enclosed within the domain of the dominant group; less valued functions are relegated to the subordinates” (Rothenberg, 112). Moreover, the subordinates, who by this point are under the total control of the dominant group, may begin to internalize the value of the dominants. “[Subordinates’] incapacities are ascribed to innate defects or deficiencies of mind or body…More importantly, subordinates themselves can come to find it difficult to believe in their own ability” (112). This theory of domination and subordination are clearly mirrored in race relations in the United States. Whites, who are the dominant group, make all of the fallacious errors involved in race-based thinking; they are prone to, like Miller describes, hoarding superior roles in society and practicing systematic cruelty towards the subordinates due to their sincere belief that the subordinates are inherently incapable of rising to the level of the dominant. White people have always had the upper hand in America, but exactly how much of an upper hand do they have?
