On September 9th, 1993 at around two in the morning, 17 year old Christopher Simmons, 15 year old Charlie Benjamin and 16 year old John Tessmer met at the home of 29 year old Brian Moomey. Moomey drove the three teens to the house of 46 year old Shirley Crook. Tessmer refused to go with them and ended up going back to his house. While reading the semi-autobiographical, Bastard Out of Carolina, by Dorothy Allison, I was stunned by the explicit nature of the novel. We were introduced to a young narrator and protagonist named, Ruth Anne “Bone” Boatwright. Bone's family, like that of the author, experienced a impoverished life, all the while she tried to find her place in a society that had literally labeled her “illegitimate.” Merriam-Webster defines illegitimate as being: (1) not recognized as lawful offspring; specifically: born of parents not married to each other (2) not rightly deduced or inferred- illogical (3) departing for the regular- erratic (4) not sanctioned by law- illegal (5) not authorized by good usage. As a young girl, how would it feel being known as illogical, erratic, illegal, not for good usage, and, in Bone's case, being constantly reminded of not knowing the identity of your birth father? According to helpguide.org, a non-profit online resource for mental health, the article “Child Abuse & Neglect” addressed how constantly being told you are stupid or no good, as a child, is very difficult to overcome. You may accept these negative thoughts and believe them to be reality. When it comes to child maltreatment this is especially true, if a parent does not know how to take care of a child, they can abuse or neglect their child. The definition that the Centers for disease Control and Prevention uses is, “Any act or series of acts of commission or omission by a parent or any other caregiver that results in harm, potential for harm, or threat of harm to a child.” Maltreatment can be split into two umbrella categories, acts of omission or acts of commission. Acts of omission are most commonly known as neglect, and can include not meeting the child’s physical, emotional, educational, or medical needs. An act of commission is most commonly physical abuse, but can also extend to the psychological or sexual abuse of a child (“Child Maltreatment”). Child maltreatment is a problem worldwide; the only way to stop it is to give parents a better understanding of the issue.
Children who grow up being abused physically or mentally will develop problems and the response by children to abuse and neglect could manifest in behaviors of delinquency such as dropping out of school, drugs, alcohol abuse, sexual promiscuity, prostitution, self-mutilation, stealing and other crimes and offenses. Most people are forming organizations to prevent from future child abuse occurring but most people are also not getting involved in such dangerous crimes. Babbel (2011) reported twelve out of every 1,000 children up to age 18 in the United States were found to be victims of maltreatment in 2005. Susanne Babbel, Ph.D. (2011) found in 2006, approximately 905,000 children were abused that year. Babbel (2011) stated, 16% of those children were physically abused and the remaining 84% were sexually abused. Many cases are reported by teachers and caregivers, but some cases never get reported until it is too late and the child gets abused to death. Susan Babbel (2015) reported in her article that about 1,460 children died in 2005 from abuse and neglect. Physical abuse can be easily detected. If there are suspected marks or bruises on a child, then there is a good possibility the child may be neglected. On the other hand, sexual, mental and emotional abuse are not easy to recognize.

The severity of impairment varies on the child’s age during maltreatment, the subtype of maltreatment, and continuous maltreatment through multiple developmental stages (Cowell, Cicchetti, Rogosch, & Toth, 2015). The study done by Alink, Cicchetti, Kim, and Rogosch (2012) focused on the effects on social functioning and the hypothalamic-pituitary -adrenocortical (HPA) axis of maltreated children (Alink et al., 2012). The data was gathered from 125 maltreated children and 111 nonmaltreated children, who attended a week long summer camp for two consecutive years (Alink et al., 2012). The researchers measured social functioning through counselor and peer evaluations.

A 19-year-old new mother, named Sheryl asked her boyfriend to watch her 8-month-old baby while she went shopping. Her boyfriend kindly agreed assuming that the baby would fall asleep, and he would continue watching the game. However like most newborn babies, Sheryl’s child was a little fussy and was crying.
