Question 1:
Do you think it is appropriate for businesses, when operating in foreign countries, to adjust their code of ethics in order to fall in line with the ethical norms of the host country?
Many businesses and corporations now operate on a global scale, not only offering their goods and services to countries throughout the world but setting up operations in those countries as well. These companies quickly find that the day to day operations and the ethics within the business community vary greatly from those that are established in America. As such the temptation exists to modify their business practices and code of ethics to mirror the other businesses within the country, which leaves the question is it ethical to do so?
It is an interesting question, should a business seek to retain the business practices and ethical standards of the USA or should they seek to embrace the culture and the expectations of their new business partners? There may be some benefits to following the old adage “When in Rome do as the Romans do.” It has been taught almost as a virtue in America to try to learn about and participate in other cultures while we are abroad, that we may have a deeper respect and better understanding the members of the other cultures. So in a way assimilating to the local business practices and ethics for operations at the location may seem like a wise action to take. However the very act of changing business practices of codes of ethics based off of the location of the office could signal to investors and customers a lack of consistency at best and a lack of organizational control at worst both of which open the door to unethical behavior by the organization.

So unless large amounts of vague data are requested by the prosecution during the discovery phase, it would not be wise to try to bury evidence in trivial or routine documents.

Drucker (2009), mentions that “business ethics” very origin is political rather than in ethics (p. 23). “It expresses a belief that the responsibility which business and the business executive have, precisely because they have social impact, must determine ethics-and this is a political rather than an ethical imperative” (Drucker, p.23). Lastly, we can mention the unethical practices like bribery, hiring minors or taking advantage of the less fortunate. Corruption is prominent in the Asian market due to a lot of family-owned business groups. Corruption is generally defined as ‘behavior which deviates from the formal duties of a public role because private-regarding (private clique, or personal close family) pecuniary or status gains; or violates rules against the exercise of certain types of private- regarding influence’ (Nye 1967, p. 419). (Rama, 2011 p.505) (Nye, 1967, p. 419; Rama, 2011, p. 505). These family group organizations could influence the government decisions and the economy by not allowing or delaying approval of a contract or business license. Good

According to Ferrell (2004), “Organizations create ethical or unethical corporate cultures based on leadership and the commitment to values that stress the importance of stakeholder relationships. Establishing and implementing a strategic approach to improving organizational ethics is based on establishing, communicating, and monitoring ethical values and legal requirements that characterize the firm's history, culture, and operating environment” (p. 129). Ethics programs ensure satisfactory relationships with all stakeholders by aligning with all of their demands and needs, and determine conduct with customers and relationships with regulators, shareholders, suppliers, and employees (Ferrell, 2004).
Do you agree with Schmeltekopf that business schools are not preparing students well for the for the ethical challenges they will face in the workplace? Why or why not?
For people in the business world ethics are a huge parts as it is for every other occupation in the world too. For business though ethics are the obligations a company has to their employees, venders, and customers. The individuals themselves to the organization as a whole can apply business ethics to all parts of the business. No matter where a person may go if they work for themselves or for fortune 500 companies, you will be working for a business and it is always good to have moral ethics and be able to see the importance in them. (Moral) For example when a person takes action on behalf of a business, that person exemplifies the business ethics to community and
Explain the connection between the economic model of corporate social responsibility and “free market” or “neoclassical” economic theory.
To provide an example of a breach of ethical conduct in the workplace, we may remember the case of a financial manager in a corporation that decided not to pay overtime to some employees. After a deep outside investigation, the company was summoned with thousands of dollars to remedy the payment that was supposed to be paid to all employees who worked more than forty hours per week. Again, it is needed more than just a booklet stating that the company adheres to the code of business ethics. It is needed serious managers that can run the company with the most seriousness as possible. Consequently, any written codes of business ethics, regardless of how well it has been crafted, need people that adhere to its internal content with a serious desire to do the right thing.
Ethical standards that evolved over the history of Western civilization deal with interpersonal relationships. What is right or wrong? What one should do and not do when dealing with other people. Ethical behavior in a business environment has not been as clearly defined. When businesses were small and the property of a few individuals, traditional ethical standards were applied to meet different situations. However, as businesses became larger, the interpersonal ethical relations did not provide any clear behavioral guidelines. Likewise, the principles of ethical relationships were even less pertinent to the corporate environments.
Ethical business practices include assuring that the highest legal and moral standards are observed in your relationships with the people in your business community. This includes the most important person in your business, your customer. Short term profit at the cost of losing a customer is long term death for your business.
The field of ethics (or moral philosophy) involves systematizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong behavior (Fieser, 2009). Many of the decisions one faces in a typical day could result in a multitude of outcomes. At times it can be hard to determine whether or not the decision you are making is an ethical one. Many philosophies have been devised to illustrate the different ways of evaluating moral decisions. Normative ethics focuses on assessing right and wrong behavior. This may involve reinforcing positive habits, duties we should follow, or the consequences of our behavior (Fieser, 2009). Of the many normative philosophies two stand out to be most accepted; teleology and deontology. Although they oppose each other in how actions are evaluated, they uphold many similar characteristics under the surface.
The ethics can be diverse depending on the business. But the ethics not only applies to the way the business interacts with the world at large but also the way they interact with the single individuals, such as the customers. The nature of the business ethics has no consensus. In fact there is a great disparity of opinions for business and the society. Many corporation or the businesses feel that they have sufficient grounds to reject business ethics.
Not to mention we also have HR and OSHA rules that oversea a lot of other regulations and rules are broken down showing political corruption of power. Business managers must understand territories across regions managers. They must follow rules, guidelines, and acceptable approaches. It’s no different from a woman going to Saudi Arabia and having to cover herself up versus a man that does not, while in United States she is freely allowed to dress as she pleases. A company that’s able to follow the guidelines within a country is able to increase is growth. The majority of the time businesses can cut costs if it operates within a third world market.
The Facts: Kermit Vandivier works for B.F. Goodrich. His job assignment was to write the qualifying report on the four disk brakes for LTV Aerospace Corporation. LTV purchased aircraft brakes from B.F. Goodrich for the Air Force. Goodrich desperately wanted the contract because it guaranteed a commitment from the Air Force on future brake purchases for the A7D from them, even if they lost money on the initial contract.
