As individuals our sense of belonging is shaped through the agents of socialization. The agents of socialization that contribute to the shaping of an individual’s sense of belonging to a group consist of educational institutes, peers, Mass media, family, and religious institutes. The five agents of socialization play a large roles in an individual’s perspective on the way of life, behavior, social interaction and how the communicate with other members of the group. Through the family agent one is ascribes their first statues of belonging to specific permanent groups, that contribute to their concept of self. The family agent is the socialization agent that defines an individual’s race, ethnicity, religion, and gender. These statuses that are ascribed form childhood and have strong affect on the individual’s life. In a study conducted by Melvin Khon, founded that different classes of families socialize differently for, instance working classes are more concern with the teaching of conformity of rules, cleanliness, and staying out of trouble. The middle class families tend to focus mainly on the child’s development of curiosity, creativity, and good judgement. The lower class follow the working class method of socialization and more affluent families follow the middle class method. Religion provides order within people and gives the individual some clarity to the unknown “life after death”. Religion gives and individual to something to look forward to after death. The common belief in most religions is that life after death depends on how we live life on earth which, greatly contributes to the order in society. Through the participation of religion one is exposed to divine motivation which contribute to the individual’s perspective of social norms as well as how they live life while alive.
