Principles of sociology 1. This statement is from a researcher involved in studying cases of feral children: In the sad and mysterious case of __Genie_ we have an instance of developmental deficiency produced, not by a loss of senses, but by deprivation of the power of exercising them. Place the name of one of the feral cases covered in class in the blank space above then, in your own words tell me what you think this statement means as it relates to the case you chose as well as to all the cases of feral children. Support your point of view with explanation, and data. Feral children are humans that have lived away from human contact in as early as from immediately they are born. These children have little experience of human care that entails social care, love and especially, human language. Feral children live wildly in isolation. Sometimes, they interact more with animals than human beings. One of the feral cases is that of Genie. This is a girl who was severely abused by her family especially her father. Genie’s father consistently punished her through beating to an extent that she could never have a chance to exercise things as a normal human being. The situation was even worse due to the fact that Genie was kept in a close room right from when she was an infant up to the age of 13 years. By that time, Genie had developed a severe abnormality. Her behavior and physical functioning of her body was completely like that of a less human being. She was speechless, could not construct a two word sentence and demonstrated no sense of personality. The statement above suggests that developmental deficiency in what children suffer from when exposed to a human less environment. When a child grows with no human contact, their ... ... middle of paper ... ...things together. Therefore, arithmetic and books that teaches logic are introduced to a child at this stage. For example, a child is taught basic addition and subtraction, that is one plus one, two, three and so forth. In so doing, a child develops skills to make simple decisions and judgment. Their skill of reasoning is also enhanced. Thereafter, a child grows to the normal school ongoing age. Here, such children have to be taught to internalize with the environment in a more effective way. They mental capacity is much greater to accommodate more aspects of reasoning and logic. Teachers use books such as story books, advanced mathematics integrated with social interaction so that they discover things by their own. The main objective is to get them effectively interact with the environment. This enhances their development towards normal functioning human beings.
In here, the children are able to handle abstract concepts in math such as numbers, length, liquid, volume, weight, area, and others. Also they establish relationships with other people and accept different point of views even the social, logic and the feelings and moral are present.

It was nice hearing from both of you. We really enjoyed your holiday newsletter and the article written about you, Adam. Mazel Tov! You both are truly amazing and full of life, energy and passion!
In this case, Genie was considered a feral child because of the abuse she underwent. At only twenty months, her father locked her up in a bedroom with a cage like crib and a potty chair that had restraints because he thought she was mentally challenged. If she made a noise, her father would hit her with a wooden board. Since she never had a lot of human contact, she never learned to speak. When they found her she had the cognitive skills of a baby and she had the weight of a six year old. Since Genie didn’t get the human contact she needed as a baby it affected her learning. She had nobody to show her how to walk, talk, eat and many other skills that are vital to learning basic needs.
Social isolation and feral children: social isolation occurs when an individual is cut off from any interaction with society including friends and family members. The Feral children are the individuals that are alien to the social norms that a society attributes concerning children such as love, kindness, care etc. Feral children have had no exposure to these things so they have no experience or knowledge of the existence of such.
Last year, Right before winter break there were 3 snow days. On those 3 snow days It was below freezing. A pond behind my house started to freeze on the first day. After 3 days I saw many people walking on that 2 inch thick layer of ice. Everyone was running around on it slipping on it, It looked fun. The day after I decided to try it. I went outside and walked on the ice. The Ice was very slippery, I noticed that everyone that seemed happy.
Over spring break, I mostly played games with my family. Me and my family went to an amusement park in Arizona for my sisters birthday. Next we went home and me and my sister played games and watched Tv for a week. Every morning that my dad went to work, I had to get up early and go to the gym with him, so I almost never got to sleep in. One Saturday he was off, me, my sister, and my cousin went with him to a renaissance fair. When we were there we got to look at all the medieval shops and trinkets. There were also shows and games we could play. The day before, we went to an amazing horse and acrobatic show. They even flooded the stage where the actors were and made them dance in water. It was very fancy and we had a lot of fun. The next week
Tons of people go on vacation every year. Spring break is usually the most popular with teenagers and or college students. Back when Geoffrey Chaucer was a famous writer, people went to a town called Canterbury. On this pilgrimage, or vacation, there was a variation of people that would go. Most of the people that went were very religious because Canterbury was a holy place, like modern day Jerusalem for Christians. On this trip they took people such as nuns, monks, pardoners, etc. In today’s world there would be different people that would go on this trip. In the “Spring Break” trip today there would probably be an athlete, a cowboy, and a hipster.
In contrast, physically feral children are of the human species, but the psychological effects of children living in the wild is when psychologist must begin to decipher if feral children are truly human. One argument regarding what it means to be human, is the possession of a soul. Michael Newton writes on the topic of feral children defining what it means to be human in, “The Child of Nature: The Feral Child and the State of Nature,” Newton states; “Peter is seen as an animal, a human in bestial form, and also as a human-machine, having a human shape but lacking the essential guarantee of the human: that is, the possession of a soul.” (Newton 55). The definition of a soul is subjective to the person asking the question, but Newton also argues,
Mowgli from The Jungle Book, Tarzan, and Donnie from The Wild Thornberrys: all of these characters are examples of how feral children depicted in modern cartoons. When they hear the term “feral” people often immediately think of children taken in and raised by wild animals. But, the term is actually defined as someone who is not socialized. “The term “feral” (wild) man is applied to extreme cases of human isolation” (Brownfield 79) but the term is also applied to “incidents of children who were isolated, confined, or restricted by malevolent adults so that their early social and sensory experience was severely limited and resulted in dramatic and often serious personality consequences” (Brownfield 79). “Interest in wild or feral children dates back to Carl Linnaeus's 1758 classification of loco ferus” (“Feral Children”). Feral children are most often the result of abuse and neglect in the home life. For example, a child may not like the way they are treated at home and run away to the wild. An instance like this would lead to the type of feral child that is most commonly known: the “wild child,” a child that is raised or taken in by animals. But, a child may also be neglected from birth. He or she may be confined to small spaces, left in the dark, or isolated from human interaction and society. This leads to the case of feral children that is most commonly seen: the isolated feral child. Each case is equally disgusting and both leave the child scarred for life. After being discovered, or rescued, feral children often have a hard time rehabilitating. According to Linda Wilmhurst, the kids develop DTD (developmental trauma disorder), a type of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) that affects children’s development (Wilmhurst 331)....
Spring break is something that happens all around the world at Universities and schools all over. It started in the 1930’s in the United States, and has spread to many other western countries. This break is normally always associated with gatherings, parties, and vacations to warm places like Daytona Beach, Florida, Arizona, and Cancun or Cabo Mexico. Some facts about spring break around the world, is that South Padre Island in Texas averages 25 arrests a day and collects about $80,000 in fines from all of the college kids that go on vacation. Also, every year between 1.5 and 2 million students in the United States goes on spring break and collectively spends over one billion dollars. Spring break is also known as Easter Vacation, April Break,
I had an extremely amazing time on my Winter break. First of all, I spent a lot of time with my friends over the break. For example, my favorite part on winter break was playing soccer with my friends. My soccer team would play against each other and hang out at a pizza place. Most of the time on my winter break was playing Minecraft with Kalena. My other favorite part of winter break was having playdates with them. Lastly, my last favorite part was, watching Youtube videos together and laugh at the funny things that they did. We usually watch Minecraft videos. Second of all, I did a lot of Christmas bonding with my family over break. For instance, one of the things I did was Christmas shopping. A lot of people were at the mall and
Wild Children are like untamed, isolated outcast. Wild children are described as a human child who has lived isolated from human contact from a very young age. Wild children have been around since approximately 1644. Wild children also known as feral children are confined by humans (usually parents), brought up by animals, or lived isolated to alone. There have been over one hundred cases reported of feral children worldwide. In order to understand feral children, one needs knowledge of the significant cases, the scientific opinions, and the children’s behavior.
All this contact will to begin to stimulate the infant brain to develop. Parents who are present their child’s life will give them the basic needs in life to be successful. Without the stimulation of the child’s brain will affect them in severe ways. This will cause feral children to lack basic social skills to socialize. The child’s behavior will be out of control because they were never taught any normal human behaviors in society. This cause them to act like wild animals. The behaviors are described as challenging, disruptive, and violent. This happens because they do not understand how to act like a human but more like the animal that brought them up. Those actions are probably their normal behavior. Just like any young child, feral children will imitate anything they see or attach to someone who they feel safe with. Feral children will observe any contact and begin to reenact it. That’s why feral children will copy whatever animal they are being raised by. This will cause them to not be able to walk on their two legs. Children will have more animal qualities than human. These behaviors could be running on all fours, hunting for food, exceptional hearing (10 Modern 2017, p. 3). A good example of a feral child is Oxana Malaya, and she was brought up by dogs for six years. She normal behavior was more like a dog because she would get on all four legs and begin to act like a real dog. It was common to see her pant with her tongue out, bared her teeth, and barked (Feral Children, 2017,
All the various experiments were most likely overwhelming and stressful for Genie, and could have been the major reason why she was never able to learn how to make sentences. I believe Genie was never really loved since she was always transferred to different foster homes. I also believe that if Genie stayed in one foster home, she could have been less overwhelmed and more capable of learning how to speak. Genie’s mother also viewed the experimentations on Genie as unethical and eventually sued children’s hospital for doing scientific research rather than providing therapy to rehabilitate her. Genie’s mother won the case, and further experimentations on Genie were no longer allowed. When experimentations were over, Genie went to her first foster home. At her fist foster home, she was intensely punished for vomiting. The experience of her getting punished was so traumatizing, that Genie needed to go back to Children 's
