La Belle 1 Kristen LaBelle English 12, per. 5 February 24,2014 Mrs. Kidwell Queen Mary I: England’s Reign of Terror Queen Mary I, also known as “Bloody Mary”, was very angry throughout her life, and that was shown during her time as queen. During her reign, Mary returned England to Catholicism and she had anyone who did not agree with her beliefs executed. This terrifying time was referred to as the Marian Exile and caused many to flee from England to safety. Mary was born on February 18, 1516 in Greenwich, England. Her parents were Catherine of Aragon and the famous King Henry VIII. Catherine was the widow of Henry’s brother, Arthur and the first of his six wives. Because Henry desperately wanted a male heir to the throne, Catherine got pregnant six times. ( http://tudorhistory.org/mary/queen.html) The first time, she gave birth to a still born daughter. She got pregnant again a few months later and gave birth to a son, who only lived fifty-two days before he died. Catherine was pregnant again shortly after, but this time she suffered a miscarriage. The fourth time, she gave birth to another son, who also died as a baby. Again, for a fifth time, she was pregnant. This time, she gave birth to a baby girl. They named her Mary and she was the only child of Henry and Catherine’s to survive. At the age of nine, Mary could read and write in Latin as well as, study Greek. Mary also was a fan of music. When she was four years old, she was already able to play virginals, a type of harpsichord. Though Mary was female, Henry loved her just the same. On it says, “Partners both in throne and grave, here rest we two sisters, Elizabeth and Mary, in the hope of one resurrection.” (http://tudorhistory.org/mary/queen.html) Throughout her life, we see that Mary was deeply affected emotionally. The hurt came from her father’s actions toward Mary and her mother. She became very angry and bitter, and they showed through in her reign. During her reign, Mary was given the nickname “Bloody Mary” due to the many executions she La Belle 11 had carried out. In total, she killed an estimated two hundred and eighty-seven Protestants and many others who wronged her or did not believe what she believed. Mary had a big impact on England as it was one of the most terrifying times in the country’s history.
