Document VII Elizabeth was a young slave girl, who at the age of thirteen converts to the Lord. The Lord then speaks to the Elizabeth, telling her to spread his world to be saved from Hell. During the religious revivals of the eighteenth and nineteenth enslaved women became converts. They found strength in their religion, from God, and continued on through his will. As Elizabeth’s mother said “nobody in the wide world to look to but God”, many must have found solace in the fact that he was the only one capable of judging them. Elizabeth’s religion challenged racial and gender hierarchies. In her lifetime enslaved black women were not seen with much social standing. They were seen as inferior.
