Ceramics of the North and South Coasts
Ancient Peruvian Ceramics of the North Coast March 11, 1997 The first pottery pieces found in Peru were made somewhere between 1500 and 1000 b.p. The pieces were found in the central Andean region where a religious cult lived. This cult was called Chavín, after the best known ceremonial center, Chavín de Huántar. The religious center was the home to massive temples that were highly embellished with low relief sculptures of gods, animals, and symbols. The pottery found in the area where vessels that were well made and highly decorated with a similar motif as the temples. But the evolution of Peruvian pottery becomes somewhat confusing and complex after this first civilization of potters.
There is a division of people into the North Coast and the South Coast. The split created two styles of pottery, although similar, they never quite merge. I am only going to talk about the north coast traditions. On the North coast there are five cultures that evolve into the dominant Mochica style, which was one of the most vigorous and prosperous cultures of Ancient Peru. The next earliest North Coast style, other than the Chavín, started with the Cupisnique people in the Chicama valley. Their ceramics “closely resembled those of highland Chavín. They were well made and polished, though somewhat thick walled and heavy. The type of firing used produced a dark semireduced ware that varied from brownish gray to carbon black in color. Decoration consisted of bold, curvilinear human, feline, and birds of pray heads, eye patterns, pelt markings, and other brief symbols of geometric devices.” In the valley to the south of the Cupisnique were the Salinar people who sometime during the fifth century b.p. moved into the north coast of Peru and spread its influence throughout the Cupisnique area. Salinar pottery, “though deceptively primitive in ornamentation, was technologically superior to that of the Cupisnique. Vessels were made of well-prepared clays that were fully oxidized in firing, making them an even orange color. Cream and red slips were used to accentuate sculptural forms and create flat geometric patterns, but not to draw figurative motifs. The technical advances of the controlled oxidation firing and slip decoration soon had their effect on contemporary Cupisnique ceramics.” Personally, I enjoyed the bottle forms they used wi...

...V period they had an extensive kingdom established and it brought together the peoples of all the north coast valleys. The ceramics were decorated in flowing, expressive lines and the modeled vessels showed attention to individual detailed ornamentation. But the creative flow in the ceramic styles was hindered somewhat because of a strict militant rule of the warrior-priest class that was beginning. Yet this was still the most creative time for the Mochica people. The final period in Mochica ceramics, due to a collapse of the culture, brought an abrupt termination of the great art tradition that it had expressed so well. The vessels found from this period show a carelessness in painting designs, and less attention to details in the sculptural forms.
Many of the figures modeled in to the vessels were warriors dressed for combat. The decline in quality that can be observed, and the nervousness and tension that were expressed in their designs and forms was related to the pressure from the militant expansionist group, the Wari. The struggle between the Mochica and the Wari, was long and fierce, ending in a total collapse of their culture and a loss a 1200 year ceramic tradition.
The article hypothesized that since the entrance of the cave had some fluvial action, there would no archaeological material that would have been preserved. The authors talked about the two natural contexts that is used by prehistoric mud glyph artists: alluvial mud bank and thin clay veneers. The authors claim that they understand the used and the preservations of the alluvia...
The pottery was used to eat out of and they could also trade it to other tribes for food or maybe even horses. The Aztecs did feather working and goldworking. They made shields and did art work with the feathers. They held the feathers together with glue made from bat dung.
In today's global economy, energy is one of the most crucial and sought after commodities. Who supplies it and how much they supply determines how much influence they have over other countries as well as the global economy. This is why hydraulic fracturing is currently such an important and controversial topic in the United States. Hydraulic fracturing, more commonly known as "fracking" or hydrofracturing, is the process of using pressurized liquids to fracture rocks and release hydrocarbons such as shale gas, which burns more efficiently than coal. This booming process of energy production provides a much needed economic boost, creating jobs and providing gas energy for Americans. The efficiently burning shale gas reduces carbon emission from electricity production plants, reducing carbon footprints on the environment. However, the process of hydraulic fracturing uses millions of gallons of pressurized liquid, which contains toxic chemicals, and some of this water is left over undealt with. The air near fracking sites is often also polluted and unsafe for nearby community residents. Injecting millions of gallons of water laced with toxic chemicals into the rock thousands of feet deep can cause earthquakes, causing a safety hazards for all nearby areas. Hydraulic Fracturing makes rare natural gases easily attainable, boosting the economy and reducing carbon emissions. However, the negative side effects such as contaminated water and air, make hydraulic fracturing a process that may not be worth the benefits.
Columbus happened to be in Spain at the siege of Granada and was called upon the Spanish court, thus giving his chance to request funding for his voyages to Asia. While Columbus was in front of the Spanish court, he proposed to them an agreement of finding gold and riches in Asia to put them ahead of their rival, Portugal. Despite the great amount of Spanish explorers who wanted to embark on the voyage to riches in Asia, the Catholic monarchs and the Spanish court then came to a consensus that having Columbus sail the voyage would benefit them greatly. Therefore, if Columbus brought back gold and spices as he promised to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, then he would receive 10 percent of the profit and govern the new lands that he discovers. Shortly after Columbus was funded for the voyage towards Asia, Columbus set out onto the sea with three ships: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. Approximately, 86-89 men accompanied Columbus on the three ships. Little did Columbus know, he mistakenly miscalculated the size of the Earth and sea, thus never reaching Asia, but the
Columbus was a very good speaker and very persuasive. He convinced the King and Queen of Spain to fund his expedition to “Asia” and he told about all the gold and spices that would be discovered there and how they would be wealthy.# Columbus told them his famous terms which stated that he would receive no less than one-tenth of all the wealth that would arrive from Asia through the new route, and not only wealth he had made on his expedition but for all the wealth made from all future expeditions.# Columbus did not want this to be limited to himself, but after he died the profits would continue on to his heir. He also wanted to have receive titles such of “viceroy” and “admiral of the ocean sea”. # This shows his amount of greed and how much he wanted to be known as someone with high power.
After 3rd century BC, Eratosthenes calculation about Earth's circumference was used correctly in different locations such as Alexandria and syene (Aswan now) by simple geometry and the shadows cast. Eratosthenes's results undertaken in 1ST century by Posidonius, were corroborated in Alexandria and Rhodes by the comparison between remarks is excellent.
“Hydraulic fracturing involves the use of water pressure to create fractures in rock that allow the oil and natural gas it contains to escape and flow out of a well (Energy From Shale).” Fracking has served to extract natural gas and oil where other methods would not be as successful but many environmentalists argue that fracking is affecting the environment and our drinking supply of water. Although fracking is still a controversial topic, it provides Americans jobs, increases the economy of the region, and the natural gas and oil are cleaner and more affordable source of energy. The EPA recognizes that natural gas and oil are an essential part to help our planet survive but do not want fracking to come at an expense to the public health of the citizens or to the environment.
He presented his plan to officials in Portugal and England, but it was not until 1491 that he found a sympathetic audience: the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile” (History). “Columbus wanted fame and fortune. Ferdinand and Isabella wanted the same, along with the opportunity to export Catholicism to lands across the globe. (Columbus, a devout Catholic, was equally enthusiastic about this possibility.) Columbus’ contract with the Spanish rulers promised that he could keep 10 percent of whatever riches he found, along with a noble title and the governorship of any lands he should encounter” (History).
Conflicting reports make it difficult to discern just how detrimental the practice is to the environment and people. What is known is that fracking uses phenomenal amounts of water, which is becoming a scarce resource in many parts of the country. There is no doubt that the fluid used in the fracking process contains chemicals, and when released into water supplies has negative effects on these sources. Injection of flowback materials into deep wells has been definitively linked to increased seismic activity. Damage to roads due to the high traffic of trucks shipping equipment and product is astronomical. Worldwide, four countries have outright banned the practice and others are waiting for more research to be done before they continue to allow it. A few states know the devastating side effects that come with the practice, and have banned hydraulic fracturing. While there is no doubt that fracking can produce resources that are used by Americans, there is a lot of doubt as to whether it is safe or not. Hopefully, the country will follow those that have banned the practice, and adopt other safer forms of energy
Ever since Columbus started thinking about a voyage westward, he proposed it before the Portuguese court, that eventually refused the proposition explaining that such a voyage would be too long, not to mention too costly. Next, he tried the Spanish court. For several years the idea was rejected for the same reasons until finally, in 1492, Spain’s Isabella and Ferdinand approved this trip.
Through her he gained access to the work of the georgical Toscana who believed in fact the Atlantic is the quick way to China.” (Beal). He fetched his believes to many of the richest and powerful people of the land. Most question this strange man who is challenging everything geographical knew. Giving this questionable sane man ships for a chance to explore would cost a fortune and it was a gamble one wasn’t willing to take. He was in Spain for over a year before he was heard by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in 1486 (History). Queen Isabella was found of his personality and knowledge of great travels. He promised to convert other lands to Christians and many valuable riches to his queen and there country if in return they granted him three ships and 10% of the income. His salesman like brashness earned his place in court. “August 3, 1492 Christopher Columbus and 90 men on three 80 foot ships: Santa Marie Pinta, and Nina, set sail the Spanish port Polos to begin his expedition west through the sea of unknown darkness and violence. ...laced on the style and materials presented in the painting. While evaluating and comparing various paintings the author feels that at the beginning of the Renaissance era the skill level of the artist was often not acknowledged whereas materials were, but at the end of the era, skill level played a larger factor in who was chosen to complete the artwork. Therefore, fresco painting, which emerged near the end of the period, changed this so called “deposit”, along with the relationship of the artist and the patron, allowing for the talent and skill of the artist to shine.
Fracking is a highly controversial practice that utilizes the injection of water, chemicals and abrasives to extract relatively inaccessible pockets of natural resources. Although fracking has the potential to benefit the economy, it may also pose a significant impact on the environment, the ecosystem and safety.
Columbus started his life in Genoa Italy 1451, with his dad Domenico Colombo being a middle class wool weaver , and his mum was Susanna Fontanarossa. He grew up in a Christian household, but it was thought that he may have converted to Jewish later in life. As well, it was thought that he definitely thought he was well educated and knew several languages as an adult and had a good amount of knowledge about classical literature. Continuing on, his career as a seaman began in the Portuguese merchant marine and was on his first voyage when he was just 14. While working there in 1470, he went on trading trips to the Aegean Sea, northern Europe and even possibly Iceland. Plus, already he had survived his first shipwreck of the cape of St Vincent (in southwest Portugal). Nine years later, he met Felipa perestrello e moniz had had a son one year later, who would become the leader of Hispanola, in Haiti. After that he was trading along gold coasts in west Africa, but sadly Felipa died in 1485. Following the death of Felipa, he then moved to spain and immediately embarked on his journey to explore a way to move west to get to the gold and treasures lying in the east. He was first turned down by king john ii, but only in 1492 did he finally get support from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. The deciding factor for this, was Juan Perez of La Rabida, since he had been the queens confessor and helped entice the audience Columbus needed . The lust for ...
While pottery from Ancient Greece shows cultural beliefs and practice of religion in Ancient Greece it also shows ways for archaeologists to be able to study chronology. Not only is some ancient pottery important to us, pottery was especially important to the Greeks as well. After all, the clay items were used everyday for storing food and drinks. There are many distinct qualities in the different shapes of pottery. Such as curving at the top (vases) or straight sides with a curved bottom so nothing could come out (cups). These include cups, plates, vases, jugs, and massive amphorae. The most common piece of pottery was the amphorae which was mainly used to store wine. This was because amphoras tended to be bigger in size after the potters had made them. Speaking of potters and making pottery it was actually really difficult to make pottery since it was such a long process.
