At some point in each person life, they will be required to lead others. For some this can be an exciting thought, while for others it can provoke fear and questions of capability. No matter a person’s reaction to this inevitable reality the unanimous response would be that generally people want to lead others well. In order to be prepared to lead people it is valued for a person to know what qualities can be found in an effective leader. Important characteristics a good leader has been shown to possess are being caring, innovative, and responsible. First I am going to share with you why it is valuable for a leader to be caring. Although people who are seen as caring can be overlooked as possibly being pushovers, often times they can be the It goes without saying that a leader should be responsible, but there is a side to responsibility that often goes undiscussed. Kim Cameron uses the word virtue to redefine what a responsible leader should be. As she explores the connection between responsibility and virtue as she discusses how being responsible goes beyond our everyday definition of the word. Truly being responsible is being virtuous, as in going above and beyond the expected responsibilities of a leader to do the right thing (Cameron, 2011). Often times people view being responsible as showing up on time and fulfilling the expectations set before them, but inside everyone there is a silent hope that our leaders would go beyond that simple call. Responsible leaders are also people who can manage situation that might seem out of hand or unstable to other because of their unwavering aspirations to work towards always improving the situation they are in whether it be stable or unstable (Cameron, 2011). Being able to manage an emergency or state of panic situation distinguishes a responsible leader because truly responsible leaders have already had either training to handle things or they are secure in their ability to handle things that might seem out of
Empathy is the last characteristic a leader should have that is listed. A leader should definitely be able to understand and share feelings with their men. “ deathly pity ran me through at that sight-- far the worst I ever suffered.” This quote from the Odyssey shows that Odysseus deeply cares about his men, so when Scylla ate six of his best men he felt great despair hence the words “the worst I ever suffered.” No one wants a leader who does not care if anything happens to them, they want someone who will listen and protect
One main responsibility is making decisions for the greater good. In the lady or the tiger it states “He did not hesitate nor waver in regard to his duty in the premises. The youth was immediately cast into prison, and a day was appointed for his trial in the king's arena.” (Stockton). This shows how making decisions for the greater good can have a negative outcome for the people not the leader.
Leadership is a quality which cannot be acquired by any person from the other but it can be acquired by self-determination of a person. Leadership can best be called the personality of the very highest ability-whether in ruling, thinking, imagining, innovation, warring, or religious influencing. Leadership is practiced not so much in words a it is in attitude and in actions. Their actions leave a long lasting memory in the line of history and lead up to may events that occur today. To be a leader one will need many qualities. Leaders have a purpose and strategies to accomplish that purpose. They are driven and motivated. In the end they should be able to attain good results. These innate talents help to make up a leader that will succeed and be efficient in carrying out tasks. But, the purpose of this paper is determine what truly makes a leader successful. A successful leader should be considered more on their impact rather than their accomplishments of their organizations alone for they are not sufficient in determining the key to their success .
Campbell, K. A. (2015). Can effective risk management signal virtue-based leadership? Journal of Business Ethics, 129(1),115130.doi:http://dx.doi.org.ezproxy.liberty.edu/10.1007/s10551-014-2129-4
One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
The first part of leadership is kindness. Kindness is an aspect of daily life that can make future experiences more successful. A big part of kindness is empathy. Empathy is not just a state of mind but a state of
Leaders is an effective tool for summarizing and inspiring leadership, not in that it teaches tough strategies and manipulations, but that when looking at an overview of its content, Bennis and Nanus are essentially teaching human relations and human decency. All in all, this book highlights strategies for us all to be better in our lives and our everyday interactions.
In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able of affirmative influence “on others”.
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.

This book emphasizes on theories of becoming a leader, it is not a “how to” book by any means. Bennis states how leaders contribute to society and how crucial they are, along with the characteristics that come along with being a leader. In this reading, Bennis (the author) recognizes an immense amount of traits/characteristics a leader possesses which are: maturity, curiosity, trust, passion, guiding vision, candor, self knowledge, and daring. Bennis claims that people are not born with these traits, and that people gain these traits by pushing themselves to exceed others.
Leaders of the future will be faced with many challenges. As the world changes, we must adapt the ways in which we face these challenges, and in turn grow as leaders. A leader is not merely someone which commands a group or organization. A good leader exhibits the ability to take an average team of individuals and achieve greatness. Leadership is not supervision or leading. It is the ability to inspire or influence others towards the end goal. As Barendsen and Gardner stated (2006), “the best leaders are individuals who, in their work, exhibit three distinct meanings of good: (1) an excellent technical and professional quality and competence, (2) an ethical orientation, and (3) a completely engaged sense of fulfillment and meaningfulness” (p. 266). Good leaders must utilize all of these traits in order to meet the challenges of the future. A few emerging challenges that future
