Whole grain is defined as a grain product that contains all three parts of the grain, the bran layers, the germ, and endosperm (Whole Grains and Fiber, 2014). Eating whole grains provides significant health benefits, such as providing the body with B vitamins, iron, magnesium and Selenium. It is also a good source of fiber, lowers the risk of possible heart disease, and is overall a great part of a healthy diet. (Whole Grains and Fiber, 2014). One great way to include whole grains into a healthy diet is to do it through eating oatmeal. Quaker Oats Instant Oatmeal claims that their product is “Made with heart healthy 100% whole grain Quaker Oats”, and several vitamins and minerals making their instant oatmeal a healthy meal choice (Quaker Oats Oatmeal Original). Many individuals, however, are skeptical about this product, suggesting that the instant oatmeal also contains a lot of sugar, and other ingredients that are deteriorating to one’s health. Of the ingredients included in the original instant oatmeal, few if any ingredients are considered unhealthy. The oatmeal contains “whole grain rolled oats, calcium carbonate, salt, guar gum, caramel color, reduced iron, vitamin a palmitate” as part of if its ingredients (Quaker Oats Instant Oatmeal Original). It also includes vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron, phosphorus, and magnesium. Just by analyzing these ingredients and nutritional facts it proves to be healthy, especially for the heart, because whole grain is its main ingredient. Another type of instant oatmeal Quaker Oats sells is enhanced with sugar and fruit flavor, which is the “Fruit & Cream” oatmeal. This type of oatmeal contains the same ingredients and vitamins as the original. However, sugar and more trans fats are present, such as hydrogenated coconut oil and hydrogenated palm oil, in very few amounts (PepsiCo).
