In this section, I present the results of my research. For each task carried out, I am presenting the most important data collected.
Task 1. Acquire understanding as to publication preferences
I have already started to research by contacting other students that I know. By conducting this research, I am able to find what would be the best course of action for Belletrist Magazine. The most common response to this survey was that most students preferred both. Although, because of the convenience most people surveyed would ultimately find an online only magazine sufficient. My own research showed that most students would prefer to read an online publication.
A point brought to my attention is that this is mostly true because of the amount of mobile internet capable devices, that most people use throughout the day. This can be cellular phones, tablets and laptops. While Wi-Fi is readily available at almost all cafes and retail establishments. One study suggests that "Not only are children and young people more likely to read on electronic devices than they are to read paper-based materials but they also do it more often” (Coughlan). There are several different ways that Belletrists Magazine would be able to afford a physical print magazine. I have taken into account subscriptions as a funding option. The cost to print per magazine, according to Short Run Printing, Ltd is $ 2.85, if 500 out of the estimated 14,675 students were to subscribe. Which would leave a total printing costs at $1,425.00 each month. Which would configure to be about $35.00 for an annual subscription.
An additional option for Belletrist Magazine is to have a modern and up to date online magazine. Which of course would still be funded by Bellevue College’s English department and student
I don’t believe that it is fair to the Canadian public to be forced to pay a higher premium (in this case via a tax) to subsidize local publications. The Canadian public should be free to purchase any magazine they choose, whether it is a Canadian one or a foreign one. If sales of local magazines are low then it should be on the writers and owners of those magazines to enhance the content to make it more appealing to the Canadian public. People will pay for something that interests them, it won’t matter to the mass

Harmony Elementary school is a grade PK-5 public school located in Middletown, New Jersey. However, the pre-k is only for children with disabilities. The kindergarten program is a full day program. Every school is different with their kindergarten program. Village Elementary school, located in Holmdel, New Jersey has A.M. and P.M. Kindergarten sessions. The full day sessions could be a positive for parents who work full time, so they do not need to worry about a babysitter. On the other hand, some parents could feel that their child could not sit and learn in a full day environment in kindergarten.
The helper helps the clients to explore and choose possibilities for a better future. In stage II, the key problem of deciding what type of key opportunities in asking the question what the future might be on manageability. The helper asks the client what do you want the future to look like? In thinking about a better future are often leads to finding ways to make the future a reality. The first relates to those that need help in managing specific problems. The principles for helping the client work on an issue is to find out if this a crisis. The age group that I am choosing to work with is four to five year olds. The aspect that I like and find most useful about Piaget’s theory is children are discovery learners. His idea of children learn best through doing and actively exploring rings true to me (McLeod, 2015). I find that four and five year olds learn best through what they experience. They learn faster be doing instead of just listening. They learn a lot through play and social interaction. They learn critical thinking and problem solving as well as enhancing their communication skills. This information will be helpful to me when I think of sitting in group too long. In the book “The Shallows” Nicholas Carr really stress how technology is ruining many brains. He believes in the natural ways of learning, the way of learning that drives a person away from technology. What Nicholas Carr fail to realize is that technology is toughening children’s ability to gather information quickly and thoroughly. Nicholas Carr said, “The net’s interactivity gives us powerful new tools for finding information, expressing ourselves, and conversing with others. It also turns us into lab rats. Contently pressing levers to get tiny pellets of social or intellectual nourishment.” This usage of technology by children has claim to be handy in writing skills because children are able to access sites and games that can help their writing performance. Children can also access information and sites about writing that teachers can’t show them. Sites such as “Read&Write,” “iWriteWords,” and “Write About This” (Saxenal 1). “Read&Write” is an app that helps children write letters (Saxena 1). “IWriteWords” helps and teaches children ways to improve handwriting. This app has up to 70 levels that require a child to trace letters both lowercase and uppercase (Saxena 1). “Write About This” is another app that helps with teaching and practicing different writing skills. This writing app is suitable for children of all ages and this app is also geared for children to be creative with their writing style (Saxena 1). Some people
Where a student once had to travel to the local library or bookstore to find information, they can now find information almost instantly in their “smart” phone. In this technological age “we are raising our children in a multimedia environment. Before writing and books, information was carried in songs, dance, and storytelling. Today, the average person has a cornucopia of information readily available at home.” (Withrow 44). Anyone in possession of a computer, digital e-reader, laptop, or “smart” phone has an almost immediate access to any kind of information they are seeking. In today’s society, a two-year-old child knows how to operate a tablet or “smart” phone before they know how to read. It is this interest in technology that leads to a decline in reading as children age. Where once it would take hours to find information, there is now an almost immediate response to queries. Through the instant gratification technology provides, children begin to lose interest in reading. According to Michael, the disinterest in reading is “because reading takes time, and we have an instant gratification generation who can’t wait to read the book when they can just watch the movie” (Michael). Relating back to my thesis, it seems like the use of electronic devices is something that is a definitely a growing issue. And while Carr does not have all the evidence in the world to prove his point, he does have enough to back up what he is saying. Carr is able to use a relatable topic to help draw discussion on something that may be an issue in the future. Also, another strong point in this article, is the fact that almost everyone can relate to having a shortened attention span when reading for long periods of time. It is also evident that the strong points outweigh the weak in this article. Nicholas Carr has many strong points in his article. Many people believe that by handing their three year old an Ipad or Kindle it’s helping their brain development and enhancing their learning skills. There are some benefits but parents may be holding their children back from fully developing skills that are essential later in life. As the world heads into the twenty-first century, innovative types of technology are rapidly growing and changing more than ever before. Not only is technology, like computers and personally owned devices like cell phones, tablets, etc., moving and advancing with new applications coming out, but this technology is beneficial to everyday lives by making tasks easier. For example, having a banking application on ones smart phone makes checking savings and other accounts easier. Instead of going into the bank, one can pull it up on their cell phone. Aaron Smith, a researcher for the Pew Research Center's Internet Project, states “Eighty five percent of American adults now own a cell phone of some kind” (Smith 2) and according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of homes with cell phones increased from 36 percent to 71 percent between 1998 and 2005 (Edwards 1), and that was just in 2005. Estaminets for the number of cell phone owners around the world come close to about six billion people (Smith 2). Cell phones are not the only technology increasing. Other technologies like iPads, tablets and other personally owned devices make daily tasks easier by increasing the rate of access to information. Technology’s job is to help society make activities, like finding information, faster and easier. Due to the abundance of technology in our world, children are growing up learning how to use these tools, and expecting them to be apart of their day to day lives much like how technology is becoming a crucial part to their parents every day life.
