Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born on May 7, 1840, in Kamsko-Votkinsk, Vyatka Russia. He grew to become one of the most famous composers in music history. Tchaikovsky’s life was very eventful and he accomplished a lot during his lifetime. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was the second eldest of the six children of Ilya Tchaikovsky and Alexandria Assier. His interest in music developed in childhood, and he wrote his first recorded composition at age four, and he began taking piano lessons at age five. Although Pyotr showed immense musical ability at a young age, his parents did not consider that their child might go into a musical career, and they began preparing him for a career in the civil service. Within five years, Tchaikovsky produced his first symphony, Symphony No. 1 in G Minor and his first opera The Voyevoda. The Voyevoda was well received by The Five, an influential group of Russian composers. In 1869, Tchaikovsky completed Romeo and Juliet, an overture in which he adapted sonata form to mirror the dramatism and structure of Shakespeare's play. In March 1871, Tchaikovsky’s String Quartet No. 1 was performed at Moscow’s Hall of nobility, and in April 1872, he finished his second opera, The Oprichnik. The Oprichnik was first performed at the Maryinsky Theater in St. Petersburg in April 1874. Contrary to the success of his first opera, The Oprichnik was not adorned by the critics, with whom Tchaikovsky ultimately agreed. At the end of 1874, he wrote hi Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat, a work destined for fame.
