“The purpose of journalism is not defined by technology, nor by journalists or the techniques they employ. The principles and purpose of journalism are defined by something more basic: the function news plays in the lives of people.” Thoughts from Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel in “The Elements of Journalism”, which I agree with. Mass media has a great impact on our lives, whether we realize it or not. It has always been that way, sadly enough, in my opinion the effect is more negative than positive. The most obvious thing a journalist can do is to stay away from such conflict topics, like corrupt politicians, terrorists or mobsters. After all there are plenty of occasions and things happening, that need to be covered. However, for the people, who want to be in in the middle of the “fire”, I would advise to try their best to use the stress in their advantage. It could make them stay focused, conscious and aware of every little thing happening around them. The “negative news” I described above leads to passivity and learned helplessness in the viewer. The concept of positive news is that the journalist should seek the benefits and the bright side in his stories. For instance, when interviewing a victim of natural disaster or an attack, they shouldn’t focus only on the terrible side and the traumatizing consequences, but rather ask the person about the people that actually helped them and the support they received.
