In today’s society, medicine faces several issues. A major issue is healthcare insurances. Healthcare Insurance is getting more expensive, which mean less people have access to it. The purpose of medicine is to provide a better life to the people; however, insurance companies stands in the way of this goal. For example, poor people who do not have access to healthcare insurance cannot afford treatment to their sickness. Also, insurance companies decide the type of medicine to be provided for the patients. As a result, insurance companies have the say in deciding who will live and who will die. Medicine should be a right, not an option. People’s wealth should not determine their health status.

The United States (U.S.) has a health care system that is much different than any other health care system in the world (Nies & McEwen, 2015). It is frequently recognized as one with most recent technological inventions, but at the same time is often criticized for being overly expensive (Nies & McEwen, 2015). In 2010, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) (U. S. Department of Health & Human Services, n.d.) This plan was implemented in an attempt to make preventative care more affordable and accessible for all uninsured Americans (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, n.d.). Under the law, the new Patient’s Bill of Rights gives consumers the power to be in charge of their health care choices. (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, n.d.).
Governing bodies for the prevention, treatment, and management of illnesses in America are now in a commotion because of the cost of care and patient access and the need for a more efficient system. There are approximately 50 or more million people currently in The United States that are without insurance today. In March of 2010 a country wide health care charge called The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was passed, that seemed to offer solutions to some of the major issues facing our health care system. June of 2012, this new health care law or tax was challenged in the U. S. Supreme Court on the Constitutionality of the bill with proponents wanted the Act repealed. Does every citizen have the right to have access to basic health care in the wealthiest country of the world? The current healthcare system in America has many inequalities in the access, quality, and cost of healthcare among different economic groups of people. In addition, it would be more beneficial to give citizens access to preventative care that could avoid health issues by addressing them early on, while they are still manageable. Siegfried Karsten (1995), professor of economics at West Georgia College, brings up a valid argument in the American Journal of Economics and Sociology when he questions whether “society really can afford not to cover all people…..is it economically and politically rational to continue to have millions of people develop serious health problems, at great costs to society……because they are financially unable to obtain the necessary medical care when it does them the most good?” (p.138). Each and every individual is equally entitled to their own human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible (United Nations Human Rights, 2006). In the United States today, a primary controversy that is often debated upon is whether health care is a human right or a commodity. If health care is a right, then all citizens should have equal and fair access to similar care, whether they have medical insurance and can afford it or not.
