The Clash The Clash was an English punk rock band that was formed in 1976. They were known for bringing controversy into the world of rock and roll with their politics, lyrics and the image they created. They were often referred to as “the only band that matters” in the punk rock world. Unfortunately, the band broke up in 1986 because of drug addiction and drama between band mates, but they made a lot of great music during the time they were together, earning them a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in January of 2003. They were also listed number 28 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. The Clash has had many popular songs, but three that really stand out are London Calling, Should I Stay or Should I Go, and Rock the Casbah. To start with, in the music video for London Calling, it appears to be raining really hard and they all seem to be kind of angry. This all makes sense because the song is basically a political rant about the nuclear error that occurred in early 1979 and the possible flooding of the Thames River in London. It alternates between scenes from a live show that has the crowd cheering and excited and scenes of the band members riding around in a convertible. Some people say that this song was preemptive to Mick Jones leaving The Clash, but the band denies this. The video for London Calling is very dark and angry, while the both the videos for Should I Stay or Should I Go and Rock the Casbah are much happier seeming videos. In all of the videos they are wearing very ‘80’s outfits, but in Should I Stay or Should I Go and Rock the Casbah their outfits are much brighter and more colorful, whereas the outfits in London Calling are all very dark to go along with the more gloomy, apocalyptic feel of the song and
