Abstract
In every organization today, whether operating on a national or local scale, profit or non-profit needs to have a Public Relations team in order for them to run smoothly and effectively. Non-profit organizations such as, Young Men's Christian Association otherwise know as the YMCA, Mothers Against Drunk Driving otherwise know as MADD, and Big Brothers Big Sisters International otherwise known as BBBS are three organizations that use effective Public Relations in order to run a successful organization and in turn help the community in various ways.
Introduction
A company cannot function properly without the proper uses of a public relations (PR) team. In order to function properly, the PR team must take the necessary steps in order to serve the public and their organization effectively. They also need to study their collective list of publics and also identify each priority public that is especially important to the project they are setting out to achieve. Along with my careful consideration in choosing these three organizations that will demonstrate effective PR, I have narrowed my choices to the following organizations which are the YMCA, MADD, and BBBS which I will describe how these organizations identify to their publics and effectively use the organization to accomplish their mission.
Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA)
The origin of the YMCA which is a non-profit organization was founded in the United Kingdom on June 6th of 1844 by George Williams. The first YMCA was organized by a group along with Williams which initially was to substitute bible studies and prayer on the streets (YMCA [YMCA], 2008). Their main priority at the time was the young men that were living in the poorer area in the cities during the industrial revolution (YMCA, 2004). These men worked long hard hours and slept in their place of employment. Being away from their families was hard on these men and Williams decided that he would establish an organization for these young men to make life for them a bit more bearable due to their current situations.
Word got out and the organization grew rapidly. By the 1851 there were 24 locations in the London area in addition to a combined membership of 2700. This is when the organization was introduced to the United States but with the first location in Montreal, Canada which was opened on November 25th and then in Boston, MA on December 29th (YMCA, 2008). The action of the YMCA was outlandish due to the fact that it divided the churches and societal groups in England during this time period.

The United States Congress chartered the American Legion in 1919. Its purpose was to benefit veterans and their families, promote Americanism and serve the greater good of communities nationwide. First welcomed to membership were veterans returning home from the battlefields of Europe. But over the years, Congress amended the Legion’s charter so as to include those who had served in World War II, Korea and more recent conflicts.
The American Legion was chartered on November 11, 1919. It was formed with the purpose of helping out retired war veterans and the communities surrounding their posts.
Altogether, my perspective on this affiliation embraces the importance of education and safety across all of the United stated. The founder has surfaced a great importance to what may have been over looked. Furthermore, being that most children engage in camp experiences at some time in their life; as youngsters with the ability to absorb information like a sponge as well as being risk takers, it is imperative to hold education and safety as a high quality of a camp experience. Moreover, is the education of communicable disease along with prevention of outdoors dangers as I had mentioned before the West Nile Virus. In conclusion, I view the volunteers as inspirational people that bring knowledge to others, but most importantly benefiting the children.
Are you needing a week to yourself? This is a great place to keep your children while you get to have some time alone. Staff leaders and volunteers are workers that have a part of the YMCA’s program annually. The week program has a small cost of $150.00 for the week. This includes morning and afternoon choices of heathy snacks, lunch will need to be provided.

The YMCA is the nation's largest not-for-profit community service organization in America. With more than 2,500 YMCAs, they are able to meet the health and social service needs of 18.9 million men, women and children in over 10,000 communities in the United States. No one is turned away from the Y. It is a place for people fo all faiths, races, abilities, ages and incomes. Inability to pay is never a reason for the YMCA to turn someone away. Their strength lies in fulfilling their goal of bringing people together.
Amnesty International was launched in London on May 28, 1961. Its founder, Peter Benenson, was a defense lawyer for prisoners and was aspiring to create an organization for the advancement of human rights. His first step was to write a newspaper appeal, titled AThe Forgotten Prisoners.@ This plea brought him in more than 1,000 offers of support for the idea of a campaign to protect human rights (AAmnesty International,@ 1991, p. 347).
...angelical work among the poor must be accompanied by well-organized social relief work. The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) was established in 1844 by George Williams. Williams, along with 11 friends, were troubled by what he saw in the streets and offered Bible study and prayer for young men trying to seek refuge from life on the streets. The YMCA was very different organization than what had been seen before. It offered openness to its members from all the social classes.
The discipline of public relations is a modern profession which has been in existence for only close to a century; however, it has already taken an important role in the fields of business, government, entertainment and non-profit organizations including educational institutions and healthcare organizations. Public relations professionals are required to have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills and have the ability to persuade the public. It is imperative for PR professionals to effectively communicate with its public in order to establish and maintain a positive relationship. Furthermore, public relations professionals must have the ability to work under pressure and effectively manage crisis which may have detrimental effect on the company and the public it serves. State purpose of paper and an overview of what will be covered in the introduction
Lack of awareness among top management: It was observed that leaders of various non-profit organizations and government agencies are unaware of social marketing and/or its potential in bringing about social change. This resulted in promising campaigns not getting a good social marketing program to spread its message or an ill-prepared and under-implemented social marketing campaign being used.
My experiences at the YMCA camps were very enjoyable. I rotated every year between Camp Speers Eljabar, which was located in the Poconos and Frost Valley, which was located in the Catskill Mountains of New York State. Being YMCA camps, most of the children were from major cities. Most of the kids had never been out of their city before coming to camp. Camp Speers Eljabar was the first camp I attended, and there, I learned how to make friendship bracelets and roasted my first ever marshmallows. Frost Valley was the hub for New York City kids. Frost Valley was not considered a camp in my experience looking back now, because all we did was socialize. At the YMCA camps, we did occasionally go out on overnight excursions in the woods, but a snake would bite someone or a child would have an anxiety attack and we would have to cut the outing short. Looking back, the camping experiences I received from both Speers Eljabar and Frost Valley were extremely
What is Public Relations (PR)? PR is difficult to define because it encompasses so many areas and today has developed into a multi-million dollar industry influencing all aspects of our lives (Adams et al, 1999). However, it is important to be able to compare and contrast the various definitions in order to have a complete understanding of what public relations is and how it is used. The public is a large population to consider, making it easier to understand why it is so difficult to define PR. Along with a large population come many perceptions, beliefs, ideas, and opinions, all influences on PR. I define public relations as the act/s used by individuals, corporations, and groups to influence ones opinions and/or decisions about a product, idea, person/s, company/s, etc. and the public. Robert L. Heath defines PR as functions of management/supervisors that foster an organization's ability to strategically listen to, appreciate, and respond to those persons who's mutually beneficial relationships with the organization are necessary if it is to achieve its missions and values (Health, 2007)'.
With social media’s rise in popularity, consumers were given another platform, a viral one, to discuss companies and their products/services. While the main focus of public relations has always been to promote communication and goodwill, the practice also promotes publicity for their clients. With the growth from traditional tools to more sophisticated tactics like video news releases, webcasts, blogs, and social networking, public relations has been able to transform its effectiveness in just a few short years. Any company that does not include the use of social media, is missing the opportunity to obtain valuable information about their brand while also losing a chance to spread its message on a platform that reaches
