There are always arguments about the relationship between public sculpture and site specific art. Some people believe there is a very deep relationship between them, while others insist the link seems pointless. They have argued this issue for so many years. However, at this stage, an unshakeable conclusion has been made that the relationship between them is proved and it is very important. The reason for that will be discussed within this essay.

The 20th century is a colorful era, various trends and genres continue to produce and pop. Facing "thousands city, one appearance" drab urban landscape, people become visual fatigue, and began to notice construction of urban environment, trying to compensate for the vacancy of environmental culture through a variety of efforts, and find ignored "ecological balance”. In such way, as an important element in shaping the landscape, sculpture was introduced into the environment construction, public sculpture becomes communication link between urban and environment. At this point, public sculpture is not only the supporting role in environment construction, but also plays an important role in the urban environment, and sometimes even acts as protagonist.

First of all, urban facilities meet functional needs, and public sculpture is a kind of art of city soul being developed on the basis that urban functions have been satisfied. Public sculpture is the art of public communication, the communication between sculptor and materials produces works, sculpture can not only enrich and integrate with the environmental landscape, but also communicate with the majority of the audience to cultivate taste.

So based on what have been mentioned above, the link between public sculpture and site specific art is environment. They both need to fit into the environment.
