Abstract This paper attempts to describe how one of the most important responsibilities of our elected officials is to establish public safety to its citizens. There is no question or denial that the safety of an individual as well as the security of his or her property is widely viewed as a basic human right and essential to the community way of life. Nevertheless, when citizens do not feel safe in their community, essential and critical local government functions are difficult to provide. Undoubtedly, the need for public safety in a community without a doubt can affect citizen’s opinions of where to raise their family or perhaps the opening of a business in the area. It is a normal reaction for citizens to automatically view police officers as crime fighters, when in fact, real policing is not so much about crime fighting, but much more. Nevertheless, it is understood that police officers deal with a wide variety of different crimes such as murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary and theft, but research suggests that all these crimes mixed together only account for ten percent of all police business. In addition to these crimes, police officers also have to deal with crimes such as drug dealing and prostitution. Police officers deal with complains about loud music or excessive noise, panhandling, automobile accidents, and crowd control. Let’s keep in mind police officers also deal with a vast variety of safety problems, all different from one another and calling for a variety of responses. An orientation toward community oriented policing COPS is positively correlated not only with an orientation toward problem solving policing PSP but also with support for traditional policing, which is counterintuitive. The reason being is that police departments while doing their background checks for their potential candidates will do much more than just checking the applicants work history. It is fair to say that for a potential police officer candidate going thru a background check during the hiring process, nearly single aspect of their personal life can be accessed and subject to be investigated. The police officer applicant must understand that there is a good chance he or she will get cut in a lie, if they decide to misrepresent the truth.
